I have only ate in 7days7ways on 2 occasions and I was not impressed. Big John, one of the owners, was hitting one of his Egyptian waiters and then threatening to "have sex with bum" and "not use Tops" which is local brand of condom. This happened twice, the second time to a different waiter who was obviously terried of him. It wasn't a joke or black humour, it was no joke to the young Egyptian waiter, or to John, or to the rest of the customers looking embarrassed in the restaurant. Along from here is The Grand restaurant and Maxime's restaurant. Alicia - for a reliable tour guide, consider using one of the travel agencies near to the Old Winter Palace. They can organise escorted tours around Luxor and beyond. [This message has been edited by wise_woman (edited 13 November 2002).] IP: Logged |

Hi, You can "do" Cairo in 2 days. Best way is to fly, it only takes around an hour. Or you can do the overnight train, around 10 hours. Naturally the flight is much more expensive than the train. Are you staying in a hotel in Luxor? Depending where you are staying, you may get a good guide to take you around if you talk to the reception staff. Alternatively, as Wise Woman said, the travel agencies near the Winter Palace are very good. Another route is to arrange your own taxi, take a good guide book, Rough Guide or Lonely Planet are good ones to start with. I guess it depends on what sort of holiday you are looking for. Organised trips or go it alone. And of course there are many of us here on this board who have contacts in both Luxor and Cairo and who would be willing to pass on information. As for eating in Luxor, go with the Grand, Maximes or Jems, but there are also a number of cheaper eating places. The Bistro on Television Street is one such place. And all the hotels have restaurants which are open to the public. Whatever you decide to do, have a wonderful time, and let us know if you get as hooked as the rest of us here! Regards IP: Logged |

Hi All, thanks for your recommendations! I am going to be in Luxor for 7 nights and think there is no point in going to Egypt and not see the Pyramids, so was thinking of taking a 2 day break to Cairo. I enquired about over night sleepers but was left confused...one company said that an overnight sleeper would cost $84 one way!!! Can anyone point me in the right direction or is this the type of price that I should expect? I was also told that tourists are only allowed on one type of train...is that correct? Onec I do decide to go to Cairo, I should be able to get my hotel to organise transport and accommodation shouldn't I? Thanks all! Keep well...AL IP: Logged |

Hi Alicia $84 is wayyyy expensive for the overnight train to Cairo. I dont know the actual price, but 84LE would be nearer the mark. It wouldnt cost you much more than $84 to fly to Cairo, but if you are only going for 2 days, and you only have a week in Luxor, then I suggest it would be much more convenient to fly if you can afford it. You will be very tired from the overnight train. It is doubtful that you will sleep, so flying seems a much better option for you. I also agree with Niledoc's recommendation for Tutankhamun restaurant on the West Bank. You can actually see it across the river if you stand on the Corniche. Wonderful food there! If you like pizza, Amouns restaurant at the back of the temple is excellent, try their Amouns Special Pizza, for superb mixed livers try the Bistro on Television Street, and my favourite place for kofta is on the same street as Twinky's cake shop. Its a local restaurant and the kofta is perfect. And of course, nothing will stop you from visiting Twinky's. A dream of a cake and chocolate shop! Have fun, and let us know what you got up to! And Rachel, hope you have a wonderful holiday too ! Regards IP: Logged |

Shareen, The SLEEPER train is closer to $84 (and that is United States dollars) than to LE84. It is a sleeper train. There is only ONE sleeper train and it is expensive. The LE84 option is the regular first class train with seats that will recline. Personally I think the reclining seats are just fine. If you take something to wrap up in (because the AC will be on and cold) and a cold pill or some other sleep aid, you'll do just fine on that train. A one way ticket on Egypt air for a tourist is very very expensive. RT Luxor/Cairo will be closer to $300. Given that you would also need to pay for a hotel for the two nights that you could be riding the train, the cost of flying gets even more expensive. Train travel is definately the answer for people with more time than money. There are more than one type of train tourists can ride. Some travel agents will tell you this story, but it isn't true. Don't worry about it, and yes, your hotel can help you organize it all. Have a great time. IP: Logged |

Sorry Alicia Debbie is right, I wasnt reading the posts correctly. I was thinking of the normal train not the sleeper train. But like Debbie says, the cheaper option is just fine, so if money is a priority, then just go for it Regards IP: Logged |
