it's TANTA with an "A" and it's a horrible ugly city in the middle of the Nile delta...sorry to disappoint you.

an egyptian colleague told me that tanta has a festival every year for a famous sheikh and that it is full of "old fashioned belly dancers, farmers and pick pockets". they also agreed with primak.
(apologies to anyone from tanta, this is what i was told)

I guess the next question would be why on earth would you be visiting Tanta? It is not a tourist destination. You wouldn't happen to be visiting Tanta so you could meet a man who was a doctor, would you? You wouldn't be the first ...

I hope you enjoy your stay, but I haven't met anybody who has said that they liked Tanta at all. I don't have anything against the people who live there; but I have not heard one good thing about Tanta. How long are you staying there for? Maybe you could visit Alexandria instead.

I hope this person meets you at the airport in Cairo and drives you to Tanta in an air conditioned car.

Have fun. When are you planning on visiting?

i was meant to visit at xmas but it will now be easter. I will not be met at the airport as i plan to stay at a hotel in cairo, i will however be spending a lot of time in tanta as this is where he lives. he has offered to show me the sights in cairo too though

You're a lucky girl. I wish you the best of times. It might be nice to get some good information about Tanta, so when you come back after Easter, please post your thoughts and experiences. We'd all love to know what you saw in Cairo and whether or not we were accurate in our opinion about Tanta.
