Most, if not all, people would agree on the health and sexual hazards of FGM. This thread is not about discussing that or about discussing methods of preventing the practice from taking place.

What I want to know is what can be done to help a victim of FGM to enjoy a happy sexual life.

This is a serious topic, so please treat it as such.

Thanks

Please excuse my ignorance, but I am a nurse, and can not figure out what FGM is. Once you tell me, I will try to help.

Sandal, I guess you're a man (if you are the same Sandal who posts at egypmad.com) so you have to know that female body has lots of erogene zones, the two most important are the clitoris (which is removed at mutilation - I know this thread is not for discussing prevention, but I just hae to say that people must STOP it!) and the so-called G-spot, which is a sensitive area within her vagina. Women can get satisfaction if the G-spot is stimulated, so I guess it works even with victims of FGM.

The other issue is the psychologic one, if someone went through FGM, she may be so sressed because of it, that even the thought of sex frightens her. The man should make sure that the woman loves him, feels loved and secure in their relationship, etc. then I guess they can have a good and satisfying love life.

(Note: I'm an European and didn't have FGM, BUT I'm a woman so I can imagine what would I feel in such a situation.)

I am the Focal Point of one of the UN agencies on Harmful Practices , mainly FGM. I am also Egyptian and I know quite a bit about this practice in Egypt and other countries. In response to your question “ on how we could do to help women who undergone FGM to enjoy happy sexual life?” I would like to ask you what do you mean by we? Do you mean other non circumcised women, the society in general, the government, the international society ?

There has been some efforts aiming towards the abolishment of the practice. For example, Egypt has recently launched a giant programme aiming at the abolishment of FGM in 70 Egyptian villages. The government has also signed most of the international agreements that ban FGM. Yet, it is a quite rooted practice in Egypt, where the overall prevalence rate is 92 %. There is a desperate need for Sex Education among youth in Egypt. Also, the fact that it has been falsely promoted on religious ground , reinforce and maintain its persistence despite of all exerted efforts! so religious leaders should be also addressed.

As for the sexual consequences of FGM, I would like also to mention one important point. We really could not decisively say that women undergone FGM lack sexual pleasure. Imagine by saying that, we are labelling almost 92% of the Egyptian women as sexually dysfunctional !!!!!

In the theory world, Clitoris which is the organ mainly affected by the practice (in most cases it is partly or totally removed) is the external sexual organ that helps women to reach orgasm. However, it was never scientifically proven that women with FGM enjoy sex less that women with no FGM. Most of the available evidence is anecdoted , and is based on few case studies or history recording. The reason why it is so difficult to study and document the effect of FGM on women’s sexuality is that are many confounding factors and it is so difficult to control them in a study. In other words, how many uncircumcised women have not reached orgasm in a sexual relation? I am sure that the answer is may women and several times. The other question is how many circumcised women have reached orgasm and how many times? The answer is also many women and many times. Enjoying sexual life is more than having a clitoris or not, it is how you understand your sexuality, how your express and practice it, with whom, how, when, and many factors, much more effective than the presence of the absence of the clitoris. So I guess, Egyptian circumcised women should be educated sexually in that way and if they are not enjoying their sexual life, then it is about time to stop questioning themselves and their ability to perform as circumcised women, but rather try to re-evaluate their relationships and may be try to communicate these frustrations to their partners.

Ps Next year I will start a interesting study on how women ( circumcised and not circumcised ) perceive their sexuality. I will share the results when finished

Hallo Mooly El Din,

Can you tell me how you get those figures?
I have seen several alarming figures between 70% and 90% but most of them not recent.
Most of the Egyptian-connected friends tell me this can't be, since they don't know this in their family and such, only to be a practice left to some underdeveloped people from the countryside.
I asked the gp of my family-in-law but then he is bound to secrecy (if this runs in my family) and just told me it is forbidden in Egypt.
My dh tells me that his sister answered to him that this is something that went on 30 years ago. How can one be sure?

According to the results of the 1995 and the 2000 Demographic Health Survey (DHS), the overall prevalence rate of FGM in Egypt among ever married women between the age of 20-45 is 97%. The validation study that was carried out by the Population council ( International research institute) and the Egyptian Fertility care Society ( Egyptian NGO) revealed that there was an research error of 3% and that the most accurate prevalence rate should be 94%.

Hi Mooly Din,

Well, better not let my daughter out of my eyes for a wink!
Thanks for the figures
It does puzzle me though. There was a big campaign in Egypt some years ago, about fgm being a tradition from before the monotheistic religions. Everyone now knows you can go to court if you perform this.
One should expect to see some downfall.
My own Family in Law denies practising this for the last 30 years. Scary.

Hi,

I was reading about the statistics and I am wondering how do they gather this information. Do they do random polling of cross sections of a community? Rely on information from doctors?

Thanks
Laura

I met an egyptian anthropologist recently who confirmed this 94% to me. he himself has participated in a research about 'married life' in the said and interrogated people.

some numers also come from maternity hospitals in egypt.

I was also told that many doctors still perform this operation in order to prevent the girls from undergoing this precedure without any anestesia and anticeptic facilities or even medically trained people around. they do it to prevent the children from even worse.
