So anyway, I was thinking (not again Monica take a break please, he he he) while my work is printing, that I should share a piece of information with all of you interested and interesting people: Egypt lovers, ES search readers, ES members and friends - this is a test by the way, to see who is reading this thread and maybe get a small feedback ok?

DID YOU KNOW that when booking a room in a five star hotel, through a travel agent in Cairo/Alexandria, you can actually 'negotiate', it's a fact!

All questions will be answered in full!
so, shoot....

I'm almost positive that you can negotiate with all travel agents, because in turn, they negotiate with the hotels, and probably take a small cut on their commission, promise the hotel more business... An expert in the field, like Debbie for example, could give more details perhaps if she wishes!

Ciao amica!

Hi Jen,

Thank you very much for the Valentine's wishes!
*mwah*

If you'd asked me how I spent my Valentine's Day, I have to say that this Valentine's Day was truly the best I have ever spent, sitting alone on the couch in my apartment, wearing my sexy bijama, watching TV over an open box of Krispy and playing with my pussy cat.

What else people do??

Hey Monica,
Tell me if it is the same in Canada?

Monica and all, hi! I have read all these pages. it was a relief to know that this forum can be interesting and fun. Some other threads started to depress me as they are full of crying women. hehe

When I joined this forum, aside from learning about history and culture of Egypt, I wanted to get to know people, see how they think, their issues, opinions on controversial topics, etc. Something you just do not get to read in a book but know only if you travel and emmerse yourself in a culture. Since traveling to Egypt is not an option for me right now, I can always do a virtual travel... hehe. I love your jokes and info on Egyptian history and display of beautiful artwork

Thanks for the recipes. I copied them all and try to cook one of these days.

questions and comments (not in any particular order):

1. please people post some of your recipes you mentioned: "Kunafa", "Kataief" & "Khushaf", "Kamar El Din".

2. Feminism theme in Egypt. How has it evolved since since Huda Sh'arawi’s time? What are the views on feminism now? What are the feminist issues in Egypt now? What rights do they have, which do they lack, what right do they want? How do women view themselves and their social roles?

3. Family culture and its importance were brought up. I would like to learn more about it. Role of women, men, marriage, divorce, traditions raising children. Egyptian in-laws. How is it different from western in-laws? Do you guys have in-laws jokes?

4. I read in one of the threads that Egyptian men have different view on "PRIDE< MANHOOD, Responsibility, Marriage" etc. The guy who commented got upset about my comment, so I never got the answer. it is interesting to learn and then compare and constrast to the Western view. Then what do Egyptian women think of this view?

5. how about the same question but only how do Egyptian women view "PRIDE, WOMANHOOD, Responsibility, Marriage"

6. Education. I heard a lot about Ain Shams University. Is it true it is the most prestigious university in the Middle East? What would be the differences/similarities between higher education system in Egypt vs USA/Canada? vs Europe? how about high school education?

7. Monica, you mentioned Helliopolis as a district in Cairo. Can you tell more about it? What is it? who lives there? why do you like it?

8. Holidays. Ramadan was mentioned. Please tell more about major religions and social holidays and their traditions.

9. What can East adopt from the West so that East does not lose its rich cultural identity?

Cheers, Katrina

Woooow katrina....plenty plenty of questions, but goody goody!!!

I will be looking at some tonight, and I'll try to answer as many before my trip.....and maybe others could also answer you...but since this thread is so long, not everyone has the patience to go through it.

But let me tell you, it is my pleasure to revive it since it is mostly focused on Egyptian issues!

Just wanted to add that my friend msjen, who initiated this (!) is on a totally different schedule now, and does not have the opportunnity to be as active on ES, but we are in touch and we'll be meeting again in July, probably.

In anycase, katrina, thank you for taking the time :

1- to read it all
2- to genuinely care about Egypt
3- to question intelligently showing real interest in the Egyptian culture

Also, many thanks for your kindness and your touching words on other threads...you're funny - I see your sense of humour poring out of your texts...

There are many good contributors on ES that is a fact! It is an addictive/infoholic type of forum for some of us, especially if you look BEYOND some posts. But isn't it a great psychological reward, to share information, and a wonderful learning experience to learn from one another in every way?...it never ceases to amaze me, how much we can learn from others; it is a blessing!

By the way, maybe you should also take a look at the Ancient Egypt forum - when you have time and if interested - to check a few threads focusing on the very essence of Egypt.

BUT...when are YOU going to Egypt girl?

Until later, have a super day friend!

happy happy....Monica

Monica! Thanks so much. I will be waiting for the answers. I am short today. Thanks for the compliments. I think sense of humor is the ultimate savior, don't you think? Oh, by the way, you deserve all the compliments yourself! Get used to be a celeb. haha NICE.................. do not you think?

I am not sure when I will be able to go to Egypt, but one day I will. Who knows maybe in 2005! hehe

Also I forgot to mention, you do get around, you are quite a world traveler. Boy, I am in the wrong field! I do not travel, but want tooooooooooooooooooooooo What countries have you been so far? I bet you will write another 12 pages just listing them all!? haha and for sure you will win the competition on that. Where are you heading now? Katrina

katrina, let's go for the Ph.D in Egyptian culture ...and for the love of Egypt...I'll start answering tonight....

Egypt, if you only knew how I love thee!

Please understand that my answer to the following questions is based on my knowledge, my upbringing, several readings/research on the subject matter, and my personal experience/opinion/feeling:

"how do Egyptian women view "PRIDE, WOMANHOOD, Responsibility, Marriage"

In modern Egypt - Egyptian women are brought up to be wives and mothers firstly and outmostly, and are encouraged to be educated with the principal purpose of extending their knowledge to their future children, and not necessarily to join the work force.

There are different categories of Egyptian women:

1- The homemaker, totally and completely devoted to her family, from the minute she opens her eyes in the morning, until she closes them at night, taking care of every detail in regards with her husband's needs/ clothes, meals, comfort, as well as her children's, even if she could afford some help around the house, she is a proud wife, a proud mother, and a proud hostess. Most wives handle the budget/finances. But Most Egyptian men are the main providers.

Which means: She will make sure that her husband does not go out of the house if his shirt is not ironed, and his shoes are not shining. That is her pride. She will spend long nights making sure that her children are doing their homework/studying, preparing for exams/ in order to get the best grades. The children generally show their love to the mother through high grades in school/college/university. That is her priceless reward.

2- The city working/professional woman, she does all of the above, plus goes to work, gets outside help, and certainly gets her mom or mother in law or sister's help, in terms of baby sitting and of course housekeeping services, and sometimes even her husband's help. This model represents the highest percentage of women in Egypt. they include, doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants, teachers, journalists, technologists, secretaries, professors, nurses, beauticians, managers, waitresses etc..etc... The village working woman does all of the above too, but some also work in the fields.

3- The socialite, she is the toast of the receptions, she does some volonteer work here and there helping causes and certainly takes care of her husband's needs, as well as her children's, but can afford more help around the house that permits her to go to the beauty salons etc..etc...grooming is essential for the socialite, she goes to the Sporting club, plays Tennis, runs the track, swims, usually - but not always - has a university degree, married into a known family name /business empire/money, inherited money, travels, is very active socially, cultured, extremely well dressed etc..etc.. This model is found within 1% of the Cairo population/ 15 million people.

Overall, the Egyptian woman is proud, kind, very affectionate, lives through her family's successes, has a very strong personality and is able to handle multiple tasks. She is the backbone of her family. She respects her husband in public, regardless of her feelings towards him/quarrels differences. She takes it extremely personally if her husband betrays her and her dignity is usually above all.

There is probably so so much more to tell but I think that this is a brief answer to your question. I will also recommend you read 'Naguib Mahfouz''s books, the Egyptian Nobel prize winner. You can find his books on amazon.com

'Monica, you mentioned Helliopolis as a district in Cairo. Can you tell more about it? What is it? who lives there? why do you like it?'

Heliopolis the beautiful! who lives there: most of the people I personally love dearly, including close members of my family, some of my cousins, and extremely special and precious friends. I spent many years in Heliopolis, where my mom and auntie used to take me to the Heliopolis Sporting club to swim and play with my cousins under their supervision.

I will try and find a map on the internet, to locate it for you vis à vis the Cairo airport.

To be continued................

Just to wrap up my last answer, Heliopolis is considered an exclusive residential area where the Presidential Palace and the Cairo International Conference Centre are located. It is very close to the Cairo international airport. Beautiful somptuous villas, the baron Empain deserted castle...shopping facilities, a 'tramway' still functioning, a great combination of old and new architecture, the beautiful basilica Church..and so much more.

In case you have an opportunity the Hotel meridien is really nice.

I'll get back to you later for more answers...
bye bye doctorah...

Dear Monica and katrina,

As if you were both reading my mind. I was just thinking that is will be great if we started to discuss issues like Gender roles, political reform, feminist movement, and human rights movement in Egypt... etc , rather than the Sharm (Beach Boys). Why we do not each topic is seperate thread and encourage both Egyptian and Non Egyptians to contribute

Cheers

hey there surviver, neighbour!

happy to see your post on this very 'special' thread to say the least...

Nice name by the way...aren't we all survivers in one way or another!
heliopolis is the best...although I did live in maadi also but heliopolis has my heart - the early years are the best memories I guess...
Alexandria also has my heart...but in reality Egypt in its entity is the one!!!
I meant to drop a line here because I will not be very active on ES in the next 3 weeks and I wanted to make sure you are aknowledged on this thread! It is after all our rooted Egyptian hospitality that guide us in life, as ambassadors of Egypt everywhere we go ...even cyber!

Talk to you later, friend...

Oh, if you can, and would like, to answer some of katrina's questions right here, that would be great. I'll contribute when back!

Katrina is getting ...seriously active on ES he he he!!! Wonderful kat, you're super!

I wish msjen had more time, as well as Laura they would have loved your posts, kat! But they are away from the computer now.

Monica

Mooly, Malta is such a beautiful island and so family oriented and so clean, and their language is a combination of English, Italian and arabic..so easy to understand for Egyptians ......but I'm not there yet...leaving thursday...I've been there 3 times already.

I'll try to call you from there

Thank God, I know you have a sense of humour!!!

About those pictures, just imagining those 'men' getting paid to service women, makes my skin crawl...!!!!

By the way I just remembered something, you might get an email from another member/friend Man_kind he was telling me he thinks he knows you/not sure ...i told him your email is right there!

Right Man_Kind?

Katrina, Man_Kind is also an ES member but he does not contribute much, he reads once in a while.

My post was addressed to Mooly, as he thought he knew her/name was familiar/profession etc...

Now friends, I am seriously going... if i don't leave now...I never will!
Cheers...
