Ya Monica .. to honor your request, here is one I think it helps too.

If you need to dismiss someone and dismiss him/her badly you can say:

Warrena Ard Ketafak (for males)
Warrena Ard Ketafek (for females)
... transaltion: show us how wide your shoulders are?

You can also be harder if you say:

Warrena Ard Afak (for males)
Warrena Ard Afaky (for females) transaltion: show us how wide your scruf is ...

If you want to be kinedr but still dismissing him/her is a bad way .. use this:

Faragna khatwetak ..... (for males)
Faragena khatwetek ... (for females)
... Show us how you walk?
===========================================
I can't believe I'm doing this.....

Thank you Man_kind!

I loved the last one, that is a first, never heard it before. But I have a feeling it could generate some laughs...

Shukran gazeelan ~ many thanks...

Dalia congrats on the progress with Arabic, somehow it shows in your posts. I don't know how but it does :-)
So it's shock value that makes them laugh I guess.
And yeah a devout muslim would never say a77a, it's not a good word for anyone anyway. Try the "lite" Alexandrian version a77eih.

CheekyMonkey,
I guess kimo gave you the translation

To all contributors to this thread: you rock! Thanks, and please keep it up...we started this, we have to keep it active...

Thanks doc for your comments!

So, for today here is a 'cultural' situation:

You are sitting at the beach alone or with another friend, and you are approached by `non other but a gigolo~ you have no idea of course...you don't know how a gigolo looks so you smile and notice he smiles again and starts a conversation and he is oh so helpful etc..etc...
We do not want things to get out of hands here...what we want is that you have a good time in Egypt but not a heartbreak...so here is how you should act.
You do NOT make conversation with that man who approaches you 'to help you'. You say:

Shukran ana mesh aiza haga ~ Thanks I don't want anything

And you keep it up all the time...you do not smile and giggle and start looking at him when he leaves or else.

IGNORAMA is the solution..ignore...

You do not give your room number EVER... because he will call you for sure, and that goes for the following:

The waiters, the housekeepers, the laundry people, the barmen, the activities clerks, the minibar help, the drivers, the doormen, the travel agent representatives, the guides etc...etc... you catch my drift?

So in other words, if you do NOT wish to be taken for a ride, don't give anyone an opportunity to 'seduce' you!

If you say but maybe some are nice...well....be gentle TO YOURSELF, take no chances.. and instead of saying:

Ya khossarah ~ what a pity/ or what a waste

be prepared before the fact!

Have a safe summer!

Also, you can 'integrate' easily when with your Egyptian friends/loved ones, by being informed about Egypt:

i have a problem in transliteration of arabic letters with latin ones. i am trying to write everything what u r giving here in arabic but sometimes it is rather difficult to guess if 's' is 'sad' or 'sin', or 't' is 'ta ' after 'ba' or another 'ta', or when in ther word there is hamzah & so on. can u give me a hint on how to understand this?
a3atini bitukgsaki! (is it correct if i want to tell -take care?)

muhariba...I feel love is in the air here too...a lot of people on ES sound happy these days...coming from here and there and everywhere to meet their love...cool..
let me try and help...

To pronouce the letter 'ssad' I will put 2 ss for 'seen' or 'sin, the pronounciation is lighter so only one s...good enough?

TTAH I will put 2 tt and teh only one...same principle...

Hope your dream comes true!!!
Tomorrow, I will go through the past posts, and edit the letters as promised...

misscurly ...that is a very nice expression...

Egyptians love it...

ana bamout feeky ...
means
I love you to death

You can say to him:
wana kaman bamout feek!!!

Which means I love you to death too!!! Also tell him:

Amal hayati (you are the hope of my life/ reason for living)
Enta Omri (you are my life)
Enta el hob ( you are love)

by the way these are also songs by UMM Kulthoom the Egyptian Diva...she has passed away in the 70's but her voice is a legend for the Arab world..

Have a good time!

Today's BONUS:

For those who want beautiful 'love' words
here are a few sentences from a beautiful UMM Kolthoum song, called:

Alf Leila we leila ~ One thousand and one night:
Lyrics by: Morsi Gamil Aziz

Ezay awsseflak ya habibi abl ma ahebak kont ezay ~ How can I describe to you my love how I was before loving you

kont wala embarehh fakraaah ~ I could not remember yesterday

Wala andy bokra astanaaah ~ and I had no tomorow to wait for

Yallah naeesh fi eeyoon el leil ~ let's live in the eyes of the night [but meant to mean let's live only at night)

Wa neool lel shamss ta'aly baad sanah ~ And let's tell the sun to come back in a year

Mesh abl sanah ~ Not before a year

Enjoy!

I have a feeling all the students are going to really really learn what it is to be EGYPTIAN!!!

What better than the words that the Legend sang for years, written by Egyptian MEN/poets...

Alf leila is actually one of my 2 favourites.

Monica, these phrases are useful, thanks!

How do you say, I'm just looking? If you go into a shop, and they keep saying we have this and we have that and showing you things, not exactly hassling you but just overdoing the helpfulness, how can you tell them politely to leave you alone?

Dear Monica,
Thank you so so much for starting this thread. It has been most enlightening - I can't wait to see the answer to the last question.....is there an answer to a shopkeeper that really works and you are actually left alone to look round a shop??
Thanks again!!

Moll you could say
"ana batfarrag bas" (I am just looking)
"ana bakhod fekrah" (I am having a first look through all the shops first, not literally but that's the gist).

And today's surprise:
Information on Egyptian meals ~ best way to your man's heart??? you won't lose if you try. And if he joins you in the kitchen, then it's the ultimate proof he really really loves you ..or...doesn't trust your cooking skills...he he he
_____________________________________________

Ruzz (rice) is often varied by cooking it with nuts, onions, vegetables, or small amounts of meat. Battaates (potatoes) are usually fried but can also be boiled or stuffed. Egyptians stuff green vegetables with mixtures of rice; wara' enab, for example, is made from boiled grape leaves filled with small amounts of spiced rice with or without ground meat. Westerners often know them by the Greek name of dolmadas or dolmas,

And here is just a few very simple Egyptian recipes website, with music too!!

Yallah ya banate...come on girls
waroony shataretkom ~ show me how great you are...

http://www.auntlynnie.freeservers.com/Egypt.html

And a popular recipe is Koshary;

black lentils
rice
small pasta (macaroni)
2 onions, thinly cut and soaked in vinegar for 1 hour
tomato paste
2 large garlic cloves, minced
1 small grated onion
salt
pepper
cumin
cayenne powder
pepper corn
powdered chilli pepper (as desired)

Cook black lentils, rice, pasta, all separately.
Fry drained onions in a mixture of oil and shortening until they
are dark and crisp. Drain them on paper towels.
In a saucepan, saute garlic and grated onion in a small amount
of butter or oil until golden. Add tomato paste, some water and spices/salt pepper, cumin, pepper corns, cayenne powder.
Bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for about 5 - 10 minutes.
This sauce should be neither too thick nor too thin. Now here comes the fun part. You can either mix
the ingredients together or leave it up to every person to
mix his own in his plate. If you mix the stuff yourself,
then first put the rice in the bottom of the serving dish,
follow it up with the lentils, then on top the pasta.
On top of the pasta put the crisp onions
spread evenly. Pour the sauce into a separate bowl and let each person
pour their sauce over the combined ingredients.

bel hana wel shefa (enjoy the meal)

Heeey, I just gained a pound!
gotta run...
Monica
