Are you asking me how to find out if a man is already married, in Egypt?
Very difficult when you do not speak the Arabic language very well.
BUT.....
If you take his ID number and full name....and then get yourself a lawyer he will find out if the man is married becasue even for a religious marriage they need his Egyptian ID ( identification) in arabic:

beta a Shakhsseya...

If you ask him to show you his Beta a Shakhsseya and he refuses ...then you can start having some confusing thoughts...

kamar..Sabah el ward wel fol wel yasmeen
you are welcome...

But, why do you have doubts about him, please explain...

leih al' ana?
why are you worried?

About the ID...Beta' a shakhsseya...when you are with him again ask him for the beta a shakhsseya...because you heard it is more important than a passport for an Egyptian inside Egypt.

If you are realy worried listen to Monica's advice. I know of many Egyptian men that are married and it is NOT shown in their passports.

Good luck Penny

I donot know why u inserted "ya ohktee"in your reply..I had a foreign teacher who spoke very good Arabic, except for the unnecessary use of Ba2a in every sentence! sometimes when u try, u try too hard!
so if this "ya okhtee" is not intended as a joke, then u better omit it!

It is definitely a joke....totally ...!!!
People around here know my sense of humour...
Hopefully(!!!)
But you have a point so let me define it for the audience that maybe did not catch the joke:
ya okhtee is used in a more comical way...imitating arab movies...where women address each other in a form of 'camaraderie' that is a bit ridiculous.
And it means 'sister'.

Why donot u start a new thread..marriage to a foreigner!!...i mean it..the legalities and all the blah blah..have u been to the site: marriedtoanarab.com
Donot we have lawyers in the forum or again the megarrabeen!
We can help others.
It is very enlightening..and disheartening too at times!

Why not?... you can start it.

And the ones that married a foreigner, could come up with good information. I would certainly be willing to bring some info I have acquired through the experience of friends and relatives as wella s from watching TV documentaries about the subject matter.

I don't believe that there are any lawyers on this forum though...

Ebtedeeh we eli ha yehtam ha yess' al

Start it and the interested will ask questions.

Hi Monica,
My second post here on ES

Eah el thread el 7elwa deh?
I been to Arabic classes since January, but I still picked up a lot from this thread!

Kimo's page is very useful too for practising the writing

As a contribution, I'd like to add this page: http://zsigri.tripod.com/fontboard/arabic.html

for those of us using a Western keyboard without arabic characters, you can get this to write simple, fixed, and traditional arabic fonts in very nice way, good for practising your READING of arabic. It's helped me a lot

Additions to the lessons:

I've also heard and used:

"Rabena" instead of "Allah" in the sentences:

Allah yebarek feek- God Bless You
Allah yekhalek lya- God keep you safe for me
Rabena -our God (or simply God)
(not sure about the translations, so pls correct if necessary)

BTW, I'm learning for many reasons but mainly because:

1. Meraty Masreya
2. Ana hagy fe Masr kaman Shwaya (to stay insha2allah)

Marky

P.S. Something that would be helpful but I've not yet tried is giving directions to a taxi driver :-!!!

Uh hi! I only speak English but my online friend speaks arabic...Lol. Totally American..its obvious I know. but Anyway...

He said "Ana a hebek" Which a few sites have said were incorrect. A clarification please?

And also a clarification for "Light my eyes" (Noor o younee) and "I miss you" (Ana moshtac lac OR wahashteny)

I'll probably havemore questions later on. This has been a really helpful site thing, BTW, Shukran (Hope I used it right)

Hi Monica, that is great help.
I am trying to learn from songs...but is difficult...I am glad I found this page.

how do you say "how are you?" is it something like ezaiak?
and "I want to see you today"
"how is life?"
and simple things like that.
what is "enta fem" "haramteny" "lisheteny" or something like that...(from songs!)
thanks I will ask for more later..
