This may not have anything to do with AE but I was curious as to where I may find a good resource for the meaning of certain coptic last names.

Reasoning for posting here I guess would be the fact that some words/names have carried over from AE - granted with some alteration.

I'm looking for one that isn't too common in particular. A first cousins', "Weesa" or "Wissa" - however it may be spelled.

Yes, the ancient Egyptian language does survive in modern Egyptian colloquial Arabic. Most linguist are know reserching such a topic and have also found that many first names of Egyptian Muslims also have an ancient Egyptian origin. Just as many Coptic last names have and ancient Egyptian origin along with Armenian,Greco-Roman,and Aramaic origin.

You can ask your questions to the following yahoo group called RemEnKimi.

yes. there are Ancient Egyptian names that are still in use.The name "Quolta" which means a puppy, the name "Ba'yo'mi" which means the man of the sea, the name "Wissa" which is the name of the God "Bes", the name "nacif" which means the handsome, the name "Ba Nob" which relates to the Jackl God "Anop", i am sure there are more names which are not Arabic such as "bi'kheet" and " Herady" which are common in Upper Egypt and more must exist in modern Egyptian .

Thanks Ausar, as informative as always

I am not one to put any belief that Coptics hold any more claim to the Egyptian Heritage - no matter how many may claim so I have just been rather unsuccessful in searching for that last name's meaning. Thanks again.

Nerhesi, the truth is that a large bulk of the modern Egyptian population have heritage to the ancient Egyptians. Reguardless of how mixed we are ,and that includes most people in Upper Egypt with the exception of the people that claim to be Arabs or Ashraf. The Fellahin and most Sai'idi have ancient Egyptian linkage.

I am glad to see you as an Egyptian taking interest in studying your ancient past. Many might not know that many things from the ancient Egyptians survive, and are handed down to us from our forbearers.

I think you might be able to help me in finding some journal articles about survivals in modern Egypt from ancient times. Would you help me on this.

It would be great if you could also post here the common names in use today that you are aware of...
for example; I knew that Anoup was Coptic for Anubis, but the revelation of the name "Ba nob"(B'Anob) is closer to Anubi...see what I mean?
