Egypt arrests 95 over suspected militant links

By Daily Star Egypt staff
First Published: September 7, 2006

CAIRO: Egyptian security forces have arrested close to 95 people suspected of links to Islamic militancy in sweeps north of the capital, security sources said on Tuesday.
The sources said 25 Egyptians were detained on Sunday in the Nile Delta city of Damanhour and about 70 others were arrested in the port city of Alexandria over the past two months.

Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm said the 95 detainees were suspected of having links to the global militant network al Qaeda. Security sources and a lawyer for some of detainees said those held were arrested after trying to access militant websites but denied they were linked to al Qaeda.

"The state security just arrested some people who were checking militant websites or websites affiliated to al Qaeda," lawyer Mamdouh Ismail told Reuters.
Sources said police were searching suspects' homes for militant literature.

Security sources provided few details about those detained, but one source said one of the detainees was an Egyptian in Alexandria who sought to travel to Iraq to fight U.S.-led forces.

On Friday, Egyptian police were searching for five suspected Al-Qaeda militants in the Sinai Peninsula amid heightened security.

The specter of militancy has recently returned to Egypt with three deadly attacks targeting Red Sea resort areas in Sinai over the past two years, attacks that Egypt has blamed on Sinai-based militants. Reuters

which reminds me of another old article in 1997 :

quote:

Around a hundred heavy metal and rock music fans were arrested by officers of the Bureau of State Security in Egypt in late January, on suspicion of 'Satan-worshipping'.

The arrests began on 22 January (1997) when 97 teenagers were arrested in Cairo and more in Alexandria, most of them taken from their homes by police. Many were residents of wealthy suburbs, the university-attending sons and daughters of Egypt's middle class.

Homes were searched and material such as compact disks by bands including Metallica and Megadeath, T-shirts, key rings with little plastic skeletons, a Chicago Bulls basketball cap with a horned logo, and posters were taken as evidence of devil worship. The brother of one of those arrested, interviewed by the Middle East Times, said: 'All the proof they have they took from the kids' homes. They took some CDs, a T-shirt and a sketch of Bob Marley.' Police reportedly said that they would be listening hard to all the evidence.

As a result of the arrests, the Egyptian band Cartoon Pillars has halted performances and the release of its first album. The design of its album cover, depicting a skeleton's hand, was regarded as too risky in the current climate. Satanic worship has been a favourite topic of the press in Egypt recently, with allegations that Satanists regularly hold meetings outside Cairo.

I think there is a huge difference between Islamic militants and harmless young kids who like to listen to HM. BTW I was there and witnessed what happened, couple of aquaintances went for weeks to prison, they confiscated everything.

you didn't get my point. i've been reading the same article about the 95 arrests and it's all the same on each web site no more no less.

what i find smelly about the article is this part :

Security sources and a lawyer for some of detainees said those held were arrested after trying to access militant websites [Eek!]

same as :

compact disks by bands including Metallica and Megadeath, T-shirts, key rings with little plastic skeletons, a Chicago Bulls basketball cap with a horned logo, and posters were taken as evidence of devil worship.
were signs of satanism to the egyptian authority at the time. [Eek!]

and only because the security sources know about internet nowadays , they want to say WE ARE HERE
and we know everything [ El makan mo7aser ]

same as what happened after sharm bombing when one of the officials said : we found the terrorists by matching their DNA [Eek!] [Roll Eyes] [Big Grin]

Regarding the current situation and the immense thread of terrorist activities the Egyptian government has to be that cautious. And if detainees have indeed contact to militant groups it will be proven; the investigation is still pending. It will not be the last time that people get arrested for possible links to al Quaeda or other militant groups.
