Thomas Thistlewood (16 March 1721 – 30 November 1786) was a British landowner and estate overseer who migrated to western Jamaica. He is remembered for his diary, which became an important historical document on slavery and history of Jamaica. Thistlewood was born in Tupholme, Lincolnshire, UK. In 1750 he left Britain and migrated to Jamaica, where he lived until his death in 1786.

His diary, The Diary of Thomas Thistlewood is a detailed record of his life and daily activities, providing a rare and detailed insight into plantation life, from agricultural techniques to slave-owner relations. In his diary, which eventually ran over 14,000 pages, he describes the brutal treatment of slaves:

Although Trevor Burnard (Mastery, Tyranny, and Desire: Thomas Thistlewood and His Slaves in the Anglo-Jamaican World) at one point calls Thistlewood "a brutal sociopath," he generally suggests that Thistlewood's treatment of his slaves was not that unusual. Most Jamaican whites were convinced that only the severe application of brute force could keep the numerous African slaves under control.

And it was largely an African slave population, dependent on continual importations from Africa. The rate of mortality was so high and the birth rate so low among the slaves that they could not reproduce themselves. "As a result," writes Burnard, "white Jamaicans bought rather than bred their labor force and were the mainstays of the flourishing British slave trade." In fact, one third of all slaves brought to the New World in British carriers ended up in Jamaica. Such was the death rate that a half-million slaves had to be imported in order to increase the island's slave population by a quarter of a million.

Thistlewood routinely punished his slaves with fierce floggings and other harsh punishments, some of them sickeningly ingenious. One of his favorites was "Derby's dose," in which a slave was forced to defecate into the offending slave's mouth, which was then wired shut for four or five hours.

During his thirty-seven years in Jamaica Thistlewood dutifully entered into his diary his 3,852 acts of sexual intercourse with 138 women, nearly all of whom were black slaves.

Brada-Anansi - The ratio of Blacks to Whites in Jamaica was 9:1, there were many rebellions but none really successful. That can only be possible if there were many Negroes in the secret service of the Albinos. Do you have any info on this?

^ Mike, believe it or not, those Negroes assisting albinos were none too secret.
They were called overseers, ministers and outright snitches.
They are still present today and multiplying like bacteria.

This new Hip-Hop generation of Negroes, or as they prefer, Niggas, are born snitches.
It's a deep part of their HipHop culture. Approximately 70% of all incarcerated Niggas in jail today in America and Africa are there due to being snitched on by their fellow Niggas.

MK - It sounds like you are talking about Negroes who are engaged in criminal enterprise of one kind or another - in which case, given opportunity, I would be a stitch too.

We should not confuse those Negroes with the noble Black people who were engaged in fighting against their en-slavers, oppressors, and abusers.

Depends on what you define as "criminal"?

W.E. BuBois snitched on Marcus Garvey and his "criminal" activities. Criminal here as defined by the US government.

DuBois also snitched out all of the Negroes who originally joined the NAACP. He turned the entire membership list over to the US military Intelligence as soon as it was in his hands. (There was no FBI back then)

The Negro Marcus Garvey hired as Captain of his ships was a undercover FBI agent. Many other of these Negro snitches came out of cover during the criminal trial the US held against Garvey's FBI induced mail fraud charge.
Mike, did you know that following Garvey, the US government made up the SEC accredited Investor law to block blacks from obtaining investment capital as Garvey did.

Accredited Investors Under the Securities Act of 1933,
A company that offers or sells its securities must register the securities with the SEC or find an exemption from the registration requirements.
The Act provides companies with a number of exemptions. For some of the exemptions, such as rules 505 and 506 of Regulation D, a company may sell its securities to what are known as "accredited investors."
The federal securities laws define the term accredited investor in Rule 501 of Regulation D as:

1) a bank, insurance company, registered investment company, business development company, or small business investment company;

2) an employee benefit plan, within the meaning of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, if a bank, insurance company, or registered investment adviser makes the investment decisions, or if the plan has total assets in excess of $5 million;

3) a charitable organization, corporation, or partnership with assets exceeding $5 million;

4) a natural person who has individual net worth, or joint net worth with the person’s spouse, that exceeds $1 million at the time of the purchase, excluding the value of the primary residence of such person;

MLK & Malcolm had many Negro snitches reporting their every move to the albinos.

The Black Panthers were infiltrated by Negro snitches reporting to the local police and FBI.

Following his coup, Idi Amin caught and executed many of these Negro snitches who were attempting to open the back door to US, Israel, and UK imperialists.
While they were being executed, the imperialist saturated the press with propaganda that Idi Amin was killing his citizens and eating them. Many Negroes actually believed this nonsense.

The HipHop gen has no knowledge. They smoke blunts and always seem to get caught. First thing the cops ask them is who sold it to them, usually one of their friends. They snitch, their friend who goes to jail and they are let out to snitch on other friends and contacts. 70% of today's non-violent drug convicts are from this; snitching.

Are you sure you want to be associated with this kind of person.

Mike the extreme exploitation, torture, rape, killings of African slaves happened all over the Carribean including Jamaica, Saint Domingue(Haiti), Martinique and Guadeloupe.African worked in the plantation until death.The punishment included amputation of limb, burned alive, burried alive, boiled alive, eated by dogs,cutting of penis,burning of vagina,killing by a thousands needle stabbing etc.You name the atrocity the plantation owner did it to the African slave.I didnt know about sh1ting in the African slave mouth.According to the French code noire/black code African slave were not human but furniture so the plantation owner could do whatever they want with them.

The 500 years African slave trade is the greatest crime against humanity.I dont want to hear about Jewish Holocaust.Scholar John Henry Clark stated we have to memorialise that day making it a holiday.The Vatican, the European Kings, the European Bankers, the African Kings, African traders should apologise publicaly against that crime against humanity.

A great book about slavery and colonial crimes is La Ferocite blanche(White ferocity) of Rosa Amelia Plumelle Uribe.

About Snitching one of the Heineken billionaire stated in a Forbes world 400 years ago that Secrecy is Success, Success is secrecy.An African proverb state What you dont know is bigger then you.

As a former "Pot head" since reformed, I don't recall the Police hassling cannabis smokers that much. That kind of thing was usually reserved for Heroin, Coke, and especially Crack dealers - who are EXTREMELY violent BTW.

I hope you noted lioness post above, Albinos commonly make comments like that. And I still can't decide if they are really that stupid, or if they are simply trying to further instill the concept that only Blacks were enslaved.

I see that you were careful to include African Kings and African traders in your criminal list. From some things that I have read, the crimes of the Albinos pale in comparison to the crimes of Africans involved in the Slave trade.

Unfortunately yes many failed because they were ratted out usually by someone who was in close association with the slavers,not unlike the character in Django,or the slave mistresses of the plantation owners but even openly as Black Shots, uniformed men sent out to quell uprisings or make war on the Maroons.
But one of the reasons Whites were few was during certain eras the Island tinkered on the brink of collaspe and many would be settlers chose to find life else where or became absentee landlords,yet those who did weather the storm became filthy rich.

European settlement of Jamaica begins with the Spanish

Ferdinand and Isabella made an agreement with Christopher Columbus, saying he would be granted governorship of the island of Hispaniola.

Remind me to check Mike's site to see if like King James III
Ferdinand and Isabella were also black.

The book Guns Germs and Steel addresses the issue of how Europans colonized the Americas and Africa.
Guns play a big part, they also brought germs which they had once been victim to but since become immune to wiped out many. They were also highly organized with big ships. Horses were a factor in some areas.

In Jamaica Columbus proved to be less capable a ruler than he was a seaman and explorer, and the king and queen, in turn, refused to allow him to govern the island.
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the Tainos farmed and fished and were even the creators of the hammock. Unlike many other islands in the area, they were never at war with the Carib tribes that peppered the region. After the arrival of the Spanish, Jamaica’s history was no longer as peaceful; the Tainos’ new enemy was the Spanish, who began enslaving the natives around the time they established their first settlement in 1510.

This settlement was Sevilla Nueva, “New Seville.” By the late 16th century, the Tainos had been almost completely wiped out, whether from the hard farm labor, European disease, or by their own hand—committing suicide to escape slavery. There were almost none left, and many Africans were imported to replace the Tainos as slaves.
British Colonialism
Later many settlers moved to Villa de la Vega, “City on the Plains,” now called Spanish Town. Spanish Town became the center for the Spanish colonists and was often attacked by the British. In both 1596 and 1643, the British sacked Spanish Town, and in 1655 captured it after failing an assault on Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic). It took five years to defeat the Spanish, who eventually fled to Cuba.

However, before fleeing, the Spanish freed and armed their slaves. Most of these freed slaves ran to the interior of the island and formed the Maroons, a group which still exists today. The Maroons waged guerrilla war against the British colonists and are respected for their ability to defeat the British in battles throughout the early colonial period.

The British encouraged new settlers to come to the island through gifts of land, and soon the economy was booming through the business of the vast sugarcane plantations. Jamaica was the world’s largest producer of sugar, yielding 22 percent of the world’s supply during the 1700s. Sugarcane wasn’t the only cash crop grown on the islands, the British also produced cocoa and coffee plants for trade. However, many Africans were brought into slavery to help the British rise to this caliber of economic power on the island.

Slaves were treated poorly, especially after the American colonies split from England and the French Revolution, when feelings of freedom were stronger than before. In fact, Jamaica had more slave revolts than any other West Indian island. With frequent resistance and uprisings, anti-slavery feelings grew in Britain especially after the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, in which 20,000 slaves killed planters and ruined crops. The British owners convinced them to lay down their revolt with promises of abolition, which were never kept. Afterward, 400 slaves were hung, and many more were whipped.

Freeing the Slaves
In 1834, after several more slave revolts, the British made into law the Emancipation Act. This act allowed all slaves under the age of 6 to be immediately freed; all other slaves would serve an apprenticeship to learn helpful skills for several years. This was not a pleasing announcement to the many British landowners who relied on slave labor to produce huge cash crops. Planters imported 35,000 indentured servants from India and later China to fill this gap.

In 1830 the mulattoes – or mixed-race people – of the island were allowed political power and began fighting for the poor ex-slaves in the 1860s. Again the American political situation affected Jamaica, and the naval blockade during the American Civil War brought economic strife to the island. The Morant Bay Rebellion in 1865 by many blacks was put down aggressively by Jamaica’s Governor Edward Eyre. However, the violence of his response was not well-received in England, and the next series of governors chosen was much more liberal.

The production of sugar was no longer the island’s most useful export by 1838, and the colonists soon realized that bananas and coffee were more economically sound alternatives. However, the biggest hit Jamaica’s economy took was in 1846 with the Sugar Duties Act, which forced Jamaica to compete with other sugar producers in price. The advent of beet sugar in Europe further hurt the island’s sugar trade. Bananas bolstered the island until the Great Depression of the 1930s.
