I've been on a family trip to western Colorado since last Thursday (we will return to California this Thursday). Today we visited the Mesa Verde National Park, which is famous for its archaeological finds. Let me share you some photos I took.

Clearly these structures and artifacts had to be the accomplishments of West Eurasians. Or Black Africans. Or Atlanteans, or aliens. Take your pick.

I'm kidding, they're the work of a Native American civilization known as the Ancestral Puebloans, who occupied the area for aroiund seven centuries before migrating south in the late thirteenth century AD (possibly as a result of drought). Their living descendants are the various Pueblo communities in the American Southwest. An older term for the Ancestral Puebloans is Anasazi, meaning "ancient ones" in Navajo, but modern Pueblo people would prefer that their ancestors not be referred to by a term from a separate Native group (the Navajo are not Pueblo, but a sort of sister group to the Apache, sharing with them a more nomadic lifestyle than the Pueblo peoples).

Anyway, it's probably going to be the main highlight of our trip for me!
