I hear it was banned and monaqqabat were denied access to campus unless showing their face.

What's the situation like now?

Has this changed anything in the scene?

How do manaqqabas do it now?

[Confused]

That decision was made a few years ago when a girl suddenly started appearing in niqab. It led to an uprising and everyone was condemning AUC for not applying its freedom of expression policy and not allowing people to practice their religion.

That girl filed a lawsuit and she won and she walked around for sometime. I don't see her anymore though.

I actually wrote about it in the university paper once. Everyone started attacking the university for that decision in the paper, I decided to attack them back. I was furious at these people just nagging and cursing without even thinking about the situation. Discussions are supposed to be done in a civilized manner and people should think before responding based on pure emotions. They didn't consider that it was a security measure, otherwise we'd have people who have nothing to do with AUC wearing niqab and pretending to be students walking in free for whatever reason.

Another point is that the niqab rule also exists at Cairo University, and no one says anything, but just because it's called the "American University", it becomes evil for trying to apply the same policy.

And from a religious point of view, niqab is not a fard (requirement) in Islam for God's sake.

I don't know what the situation is now, but I haven't seen any monaqqabas there for a while now.

Very interesting Focus, so you don't see any of them there for a while now? I understand you are an AUC student right, and have been there recently?

Amazing! I mean more than 90% of the Egyptian women are now veiled or wearing some kind of head cover due to the reasons we know, most importantly to hold a low profile in order not to be harassed in the streets.

But I always thought Monaqqabat are often depressed! They want NOTHING to with the society any more. No contact whatsoever, except of course for the absolute necessities.

My youngest sister is refusing to marry this son of one of the Egyptian "Alpha" [Wink] families who looks like Wael Kafoury (for God's sake [Frown] , I would marry ommoh (his mother) if it was allowed to have two husbands), only because his sister is monaqqabah!!!

One dumbass once called the Egyptian TV, during a program hosted by this chubby female religious leader who wears "only" a headscarf, and asked her if it was 7aram NOT to wear a niqab.

Are our daughters/sisters getting depressed due to being oppressed?

[Frown]

I too get very scared of it. Imagine the kids then!

I remember once very long time ago, in the Abdel Wahab Motawe3 mail in his weekly page of Bareed el-Ahram, there was a letter from a Monaqqaba lady who was forced by her husband to wear the Niqab. She said the worst thing she experiences in her daily life, is how some kids scream and run away when they see her in the street.

I mean everyone is entitled to wear what they choose, but the least form of showing respect to others is to show your face when you're talking with someone.

I mean isn't it considered rude to talk to someone you just met with sunglasses on? Or do I, like the Dutch saying goes, like to fcuk ants? [Big Grin]

My brother had just started his first semester at AUC & he told me that so far he hasn't seen any monaqabat... there are only mohagabat

It is very rude to talk to someone you just met with sunglasses ... my dad always critisizes anyone who does that.

Hence, it is rude to wear a tent when you just met somebody... so you should just take off all your clothes in order to have better manners [Wink]

Good question!

How old is the GUC anyway? (that's The German University in Cairo)

My sister works there and I never asked her any info about it! [Roll Eyes]

LOL...I dunno most of the niqabis I saw in Egypt were quite large and from what I could gather through their "peep hole" they weren't that attractive. I thought...what the hell are they covering? Maybe they were hiding their unattractiveness.

Some scholars see that Covering the face is obligatory . Others see it's Sunna and not obligatory...

I think we cant impose women to do it or not. If they choose it themselves, we shouldnot force them to take it off.

Yeah you can rate members. By the looks of it someone didn't like something that you said. You can also hide your rating. Just go to your profile.

Are you sure it's not allowed in Cairo University? I have seen girls in both Cairo and Ain Shams university who are in Niqab and from what I know they have like a woman among security staff who checks those Niqabi gurls inside the security office. Same happens during exams too.

Doesn't seem to me like a big obstacle to overcome.

With all due respect, I find it a little off putting the mocking of these women. In my opinion, it is fine if you don't like this style or agree to it, but if we are about respecting women (however we define it) insulting how they 'probably' look is similar to mocking someone for being fat or whatever. So maybe someone doesn't like niqab, niqabbis don't like shorts. Does that mean they should be judging someone wearing shorts? No, of course not - people would find it insulting. Tolerance is a two way street.

I agree about having to show mutual respect. But many Monaqqabas think they are saints and DO look down on those who are veiled without a niqab, let alone those who wear shorts.

I also didn't really start this thread to mock monaqqabas or ask what people think of the Niqab. But you know how it goes on ES.

We're a hayafa nation. [Cool]

There is no law in Germany that prohibits people from entering a university wearing a niqab. I don't know about GUC, but I would assume it's allowed there.

Simple, any store
carrefour maadi for example

I hope you are home-schooling your children in Arabic because your english is terrible, spelling and punctuation.

If you cant write a gramatically sound sentence please send them to a proper school.

You should see the UK ones among us! [Roll Eyes]

They're the reason why I decided not to immigrate to England.

Obviously it's impossible for a child living in the UK to learn proper English!

Easy easy Chimps, this is Egyptian humor, he was very much joking!

That's a typical situation of trans-cultural misunderstandings on the board.
