I took these tidbits from about 5 different threads from the Egypttalk.net forum. I find this useful. Most locals don't have pets so are oblivious to these needs:Quote (Casual Cairo @ June 16 2004,09:34)
Don't know where you live, but a good source to know about it AMIN in Maadi on Rd.9. He has cat litter, cat food, and anything else you want for your pets. I live in Heliopolis, and if I order LE200 worth of supplies at a time, he will deliver it all to me. HE IS GREAT!!
Debbie, I've been intending to ask you for his phone number and keep forgetting, can you send it to me?
The store in Zamalek where I get my cat litter (bcs they have the best kind) doesn't deliver and it's a pain to carry those huge sacks around.
Answer:
Dalia, Sorry, I've misplaced his card. It's not where it is supposed to be...dangit! Anyway, when I come across it again, I'll post it, but if you are on Rd 9 before that, he is right down there. He's on the Metro track side of Rd 9 and he's not far south of the El Maadi Metro station/flyover into Maadi from the Cornishe.
Anyway, yes, there are plenty of places to get pet supplies, such as the pet store mentioned in Zamalek on 26 July, major supermarkets like Alfa, Metro, Carrefour, and at some vets. My vet in Heliopolis has quite abit of this stuff for both cats and dogs. If you have had luck with specific brands you like from the states though, it is a good idea to bring what you like with you.
All big supermarkets carry basic cat stuff, like food, toys, flea collars etc.

a long tidbit about an emergency but with plenty of addresses and vet names:
Hi All,
I need help finding a good veterinarian in Cairo. If any of you has any experience, please let me know. I have a 10 year old dalmatian female (Sultana) who is very, very sick - we suspect pyometra (and her daughter, who was 8 years old, just died two weeks ago: we still have no idea what she was sick with or how it killed her). These dogs are part of our family, and as any of you who live here and have pets already know the standard of veterinary care is abysmal.
If you're going to recommend Farouk, Berge, Nashaat or Amr Adel then don't bother (been there & done that). We couldn't even get an agreement on diagnosis! Anyway, my baby is pretty sick, so I would appreciate any advice anyone out there could offer. Thanks.
Berge saved my cat when the doctors at PDSA had given up. PDSA are a bunch of wankers, but Berge did the job. I don't know what beef you have with him, but I'd let him take care of my animals any time
I have to agree with casual cairo, he is very good indeed, He saved 3 of my cats and ut one to sleep (Couldn't be helped, she was in pain).
He is very good indeed and can also stamp your animal passports if you have any.
My first experience with Berge was when my 10 year old was still a puppy. He was my vet until she was 2 years old (vaccinations, simple first aid, check ups - for serious stuff I used to go to the PDSA - but that was when Farouk was there). She kept having false pregnancies and Berge strongly encouraged me to get her mated. I followed his advice, and throughout her pregnancy he was extremely attentive, and made no bones about the fact that he would be able to put me in contact with buyers for the puppies.
When she gave birth, he was eager to come over and see the puppies (Dalmatians were apparently very popular in Cairo, and there weren't many to be had). He took one look and the newly born pups and his comment was :" These aren't dalmatians, they have no spots", without examining the mother he just left!!! The idiot didn't know that dalmatians aren't born with their spots, and once he figured his commission from selling them was blown - he just wasn't interested.
I had to get Farouk on the phone (he still wasn't into house calls then) and my then fiance (whose great dane had recently given birth) to help me out with her postpartum care. Berge wouldn't return my calls when I was worried that she still had a pup inside that wasn't coming out. I gave her all her shots, medications, etc.
Our 10 pups weren't sold. 8 of them were "adopted" out to families that my sister and I interviewed. We chose to keep one male only, but when we discovered (around the time that she was a few weeks old) that one of the girls was deaf, we decided to keep her too (Berge told us to put her down, because a deaf dog wouldn't survive: she lived to be 8 years old and died 2 weeks ago -we guess from pyometra). One of the males was returned by the family that didn't feel they could handle him anymore, so we ended up with a house full of 4 dalmatians, and full of love.
That's my beef with Berge, to me he was in it for the money. He wasn't there for us when we needed him, and lets face it, personalities aside, they're all pretty much at the same pathetic level. Judging from the posts, maybe he's more of a cat specialist (no clue about dogs though)

LOL ... even I know that and I'm neither a veterinarian nor do I own a Dalmatian.
Anyway - I have a veterinarian in Mohandessin, her name is Neveen Hosny (347 56 40). To be honest, I can't really judge if she's particularly good or not, I personally like her a lot and she's been recommended to me by several people, but I also heard of someone who's puppy died after she failed to diagnose him correctly, but maybe you want to give it a try.
Wishing you the best of luck.
Thanks to everyone who replied. My dog had her operation today (hysterectomy), and she is stable. Adel Amer in Maadi did the operation in the end. We'll see how it all turns out. Once again, thanks for your help.
Nicotina. Sorry to hear your dog is unwell.
I think I have one of Sultana's daughters. She is also 8 years old. And her name Emelia. She is also very sick. She is feeling tired and weak and has all these weird bumps all over her body. When I went to Berge, he said it was genetic. And so did Rafik Nashed in Zamalek who is very very good. Maybe we can help eachother?
Hi Schmetterling, I'm so sorry to hear that Emelia is not doing well. If Emelia is who I think she is then she has lovely brown spots instead of black (Max's twin?). Of the three pups that we kept none of them had any bumps on their body (although Sultana has always had one on her cheek?).
I haven't had great experiences with Rafik Nashed, although many others are very happy with him. My advice is to keep getting other opinions until something sounds logical. I tried posting on a lot of different internet sites asking for advice, maybe that might help.
After taking Sultana to 4 different doctors this time, we ended up with Adel Amer in Maadi (I can give you his contact info if you want). He's the one who operated on Sultana, and he says he spent 30 years practising in the U.S. His clinic is nicer than most (well equipped).
Try Dr. Rafik Nashed in Zamalek - clinic 736 2402, mobile 012 310 2401. I talked to him last fall when I was writing an article on pet boarding facilities and he made an excellent impression - both professional and compassionate.
Good luck!
Well, the vet that Nicotina had nothing nice to say about, but the rest of us like him for our cats has an office in Mohandiseen.
He is Dr. Berge Yacoub at 40 El Falah Str. Mohandiseen
305-4806
He generally takes Sundays off, and his evenings are usually spent at the Heliopolis clinic, so it may be too late for him, unless you can wait until Monday.
Sorry.
Well those were just tidbits but it explains the different vets personalities and reputations. Cut and paste this into a word document, keep it on reserve.
I would actually start experimenting with your own recipee for dog food now, so your sweet pouch doesn't have to go through experimental eating while in a new country. Or see if you can contact Metro or Carrefour supermarkets to see which brands of dog food they have. I had the website address just a little while ago, I will add it when I find it.
