Well I'm a Sasquatch - I take size 12 (US) = 10UK = 44 European I don't know what size JB or Laura take. But I have a very hard time getting shoes to fit in any country of the world hence I have a trunk full in my parent's garage - if I ever find (a) a pair that fits and (b) is actually pleasant to look at - I tend to buy 3 pairs. However, as I have had problems walking in high heels for several years due to knee injury, I can't actually wear most of them!

I have the fresh air now VB YEAH!! Shanta, am same size as you and it's really depressing trying to find anything here that fits, is decent looking and lasts. Want to open a shoe store with me? haha
I also really miss having a selection of affordable reading material. Yes, there are tons of things you can download and read on the net, but it's not like you can take it to the beach with you. *makes mental note to stop being kaslanah and learn to read arabic*

Laura - are there any shops here that sell big shoes? I haven't seen any - and I tend to live in my trainers or ship ships

The only one I know Shanta is El Professor. They have one shop in Cairo,in Heliopolis and another in Alex. I have searched and asked till I am blue in the face and that's all I have been able to find. When my husband comes back, I can ask him for the exact address of the one in Cairo if you want.

Remembered I had one of their bags laying around. Cairo number 02 7868111 or 7868222 email address info_professeur(at)yahoo.com It's in the Roxy district if I remember correctly. Most shoes are priced around 70 -80 LE
Ok it's in the Ameera Center in Roxy, Khalifa El Maamoon St. just beside the Mobile Petrol Station. It's downstairs. Have fun shoe shopping

Bring sweatshirt, sweatpants, kneesox, and big fuzzy slippers - cuz it gets damn cold, and the tile floors let your feet freeze off. I know - its seems stupid to talk about the cold, when its so damn hot here now - but trust me - you will need it.

The most i miss is my Cats.
I know Egypt gets a little trying to the point you feel like such an outsider and stare to the floor. well that look dont suit me, and im sure it dont suit you either so do what i did there, dont walk ANYWHERE without dark sunglasses on. i had to wear a big hat too because the sun.
kinda looked like a celeb going incognito but the glasses and the hat make good security blankets lemme tell ya!

I will miss plain and simple, the pure peace and quiet of my house. All I can hear at the moment are the keys tapping and the rain. In my flat in Cairo all i can hear is engines revving, horns papping and the Prayer Man... sometimes peace and quiet is nice.

I guess in alex its a bit different, as i live in a local area and the stares are so bad, the womans bother me more somehow, they give the most evil looks sometimes. I wish i had the courage to stare back.

Nobody round here gets mail either! You have to use someone else's address to get anything - try explaining that to various UK agencies who demand you have an address abroad not a c/o in the UK!

I think the thing I most missed when I was visiting Egypt in the winter was Socks & Warm clothes!! Ohhh the floors were soooo cold and my nose felt like an ice cube resting in the center of my face. The only time I was comfortable was when my friend turned on the small electric heater and I sat right in front of it. Then it blew the circuits and the power went off...lol. I would come back to Egypt in a heartbeat though. I miss it terribly. And I too wore sunglasses and a floppy hat...I got stares...but I could stare back without being obvious!

What I missed most and something I never forgave Egypt for was 4 genuine seasons. There was a time when I was in position solidify my business and to but land in Qatamiya (new Cairo) and I couldn’t do it. I loved Egypt but seasons for me were extremely important. Having no rain and no storms were exacerbated by the looooong Egyptian summer. May-October. I could complain about the pollution, crowdedness, etc … but the weather and climate were something that I missed most. You read about members saying give me that sun everyday, walk in my shoes as I have lived in Cairo 5 continuous years and you will pray that climate change turns things around in the Nile valley. I love the sun but 100 degree weather for 120 straight days followed by an autumn brings black clouds due to rice fields’ burning in the Delta.
You know how I coped? I would awake around 1-2pm everyday during summer, leave my apartment and drive a short distance to Red Onion (in Maadi), call a friend to join me, order a shrimp cocktail or other appetizers , drank a few screwdrivers , and basically chilled in the A/C joint until the sun and heat subsided. It was fun though but there is more to life than just drinking and women.

ditto. My airplane, good quality internet, SciFi channel, and the various smells of both Spring and Autumn in Kansas, oh and the occasional thunderstorm.
