Was that for the Judo? I think they still have a chance in handball don't they? They were up against Korea yesterday but we left before it ended so I don't know how it came out.

I'm hearing something about the female chinese gold medalists they're saying are underage, 14 instead of the declared 16 years old. Has anyone heard anything more on this?? I don't see what the big deal would be personally, two extra years of preparing doesn't make that much difference. I know because I was a gymnast in my youth, preteens, teens and highschool. Unless this is simply the manditory age for whatever reason. What do you think?

He inspired the film "Chariots of Fire". Born in China, he won the 400 meter race at the Paris Olympics in 1924. He died in a Japanese prison camp, in China, where he had returned as a missionary.
Not everyone may know that the first "Chinese" athlete to win an Olympic medal was a Scotsman born in China. He was Eric Liddell, the son of Presbyterian missionaries, born in Tianjin in 1902. After his Olympic victory in 1924 in Paris - which inspired the film "Chariots of Fire" - Liddell (whose Chinese name is Li Airui) returned to China, where he worked as a Presbyterian missionary, until his death in a Japanese prison camp in 1945.
Liddell remained in China until the was five years old, then moved to Scotland, where he studied near Edinburg. He became a great athlete (cricket, rugby, and running), and participated in the Paris Olympics in 1924. But since the 100 meter race - in which he would have made his best time - was scheduled for a Sunday, he declined to participate, because of his strict and solid religious upbringing.
According to some witnesses, it seems that the king of England himself tried to convince him to compete, in the name of "national pride", but he declined because "the commandments of God come before national honor. I will not run on Sunday".
Liddell trained for the 400 meter race, which he won with a record time of 47.6 seconds, receiving the gold medal.
After his victory, he received a degree in science and returned to Tianjin as a teacher, first in the Anglo-Chinese school, and then in a school for the poor.
In 1941, when war was already underway between China and Japan, he sent his wife and daughters to Canada because of the danger, but remained in China himself to teach in Shaochang. In 1943, Shaochang was conquered by the Japanese, and Liddell was interned in a camp in Weifang, where he tried to help the elderly and sick, and taught children.
Eric Liddell died on February 21, 1945. A few months earlier, prime minister Winston Churchill obtained the liberation of some of the prisoners, and the famous athlete should have been one of them, but he gave up his place to a pregnant prisoner.
His last words were: "It's complete surrender".
Although he was not Chinese by nationality, he was buried in the Mausoleum of the Martyrs, in Shijiazhuang, which is a great honor.

Mubarak wants to know why Egypt did so badly in Beijing
By AFP
First Published: August 25, 2008
CAIRO: President Hosni Mubarak on Monday demanded to know why his country's athletes failed to win more than a single bronze medal at the Olympics in China, the official MENA agency reported.
The 80-year-old ruler "ordered the formation of a fact-finding committee to assess the bad performance of the Egyptian mission to the Beijing Olympic Games that wrapped up on Sunday," MENA reported.
"The committee will be in charge of determining who is responsible for the Egyptian mission's bad performance and calling them into account.
"Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif decided to form the committee led by Minister of State for Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Dr Mufid Shehab, to compare the results of the team's performance with its targeted goals," MENA said.
Egypt sent a 177-strong delegation to Beijing, but only judoka Hesham Mesbah won a medal for his country, coming away with a bronze. –AFP

If you add up all the medals gathered by the Arab world..Bahrain Tunisia Algeria Morroco Sudan and Egypt, you'll have a total of 2 Gold ,3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals, that's 8 in total...less than Kenya who've won 5 Gold 5 Silver and 4 Bronze and a total of 14 medals.

He "demanded" really? Did it occur to him that it's becomes he doesn't give a damn about them, that the government doesn't give them enough funds, that they don't sponsor them, or provide them with the training, equiptment, coaches, and encouragment they need?
I read in the news that every gold medal that Australia won cost the government about 20 milion dollars in terms of training and support and all the years of training. Now how much money does Mubarak put? Zero, nothing. And of course we didn't, and won't win anything unless that changes.

Mubarak is the president of Egypt, and this is an EGYPTIAN website, so why do you think an article about him is not important?
