Step 1 At the bottom of each page you will see a URL....next to it you will see "Display"...also Board/Email.
Step2 Make sure you selected the "Display" button.
Step 3 Click on any smilly you prefer...you will see a URL including those [img]....[/img] will appear in the space ....Copy the URL and paste it in you're reply....and BOBS your uncle!
I also struggled a bit at first but you will get the hang of it!
