Jean, Sohag sucks average; but the people are really nice.
Al-Safa Hotel is probably the only decent one there.
There's hardly anything to see there other than the White & Red Monasteries. It is a major Coptic Christian center for Upper Egypt. Oh and the Nile view there is nice too.
And it's at least 3 hours by car from Luxor- I think.
