Have you ever tried hookah/shisha before? if so what is your faveourite flavour?

I know how tofa7 (apple) is extremely popular in masr - if not the whole region - but I personally enjoyed cherry or grape flavour - although I am not a frequent smoker of it.

Just nice now and then.

Sure i have tried it,and actually do when im in Egypt or Morocco. My favorite flavours are cantaloupe and mango.Have to admit though, that after some minutes blowing the fumes and struggling i get bored...heheehe! [Big Grin]

yes cantaloupe was quite nice from what I remember. I enjoy it with a nice mint tea (but I hate the mint teabags you get in the touristy parts) Its nicer with the actual leaves in the glass like in the local cafes [Razz]

Believe it or not,i've gotten some of those touristy tea bags when asked for tea in a cafe in Cairo. [Mad] And i can assure you it was not a touristy place.

Oh I don't want to spoil this thread but shisha smoking is a huge health hazard. After knowing how harmful it is I'd advise everybody to stop or at least drastically reduce the sessions.

I used to love to have shisha before, sitting in a street cafe with friends and just talking away. [Frown]

there is a newish product though from India- herbal shisha without the tobacco or nicotine, yet has fruit flavours.

http://www.shishagenie.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2&zenid=tut3i1vpqmabaatd1ovn3rjf11

sure it is still 'smoke' but at least without the real harmful tobacco

smoking shisha in egypt is big past-time there - its like how people get together in pubs in england for a few drinks -in masr the men socialise in the cafes with shisha and 2awa - coffee. I also enjoyed playing shatrang (chess) with the local guys at the cafes in alexandria, good times.

Oh wow, I didn't knew that. How does it taste??

Posted by EgyptianLiving*Com (Member # 15738) on :

yeh it tastes just like the real fruit flavours - the 'taste' is better than the tobacco based shisha molasses - it's spot on. But I guess the tobacco based ones you get more of a smoke out of it - naturally.

I like the apple, if "like" can be considered my feelings towards smoking shisha. I smoked it on my last visit to Cairo with friends and almost coughed myself to death after being made to laugh by them...you know who you are!!! [Razz]

Then I was poked fun of by then cos I was not bellowing like a dragon! [Big Grin]

I am used to smoking cigarettes, I don't really get anything from smoking shisha and feel like I am smoking fresh air....but I love the smell

This does not pose any more health hazards than those done by cigarettes/tobacco smoking.
At least i only do shisha when traveling in those countries. [Cool] For me is part of the local fun. [Cool]

Apple/Double Apple is quite harsh when compared to other flavours - and it doesn't really taste like apple at all - whereas cherry, grape etc you can taste it.

But still its the most popular flavour without a doubt. The local cafes only have apple flavour anyway, they would know ur an agnabi when u ask for all these exotic flavours lol

Never tried it

I remember an article sometime beginning of the year I posted on here that stated that one shisha is a equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes so it truly is a very harmful thing to do.

Shisha facts:

"One of the oldest and deep rooted traditions in Turkey is the Nargile (Hookah), with both men and women finding great pleasure in smoking the waterpipe. The nargile started a whole new culture which endured for many, many years. Even today the nargile gives enjoyment to a special breed of smokers. The original nargile came from India, but it was rather primitive as it was made out of coconut shell. Its popularity spread to Iran and then to the rest of the Arab world.

But it was in Turkey that the nargile completed its revolution, and did not change its style for the last few hundred years. The nargile became a very important part of the coffee shop culture, finding its popularity in Turkey around the time of Murat the IV'th, 1623-40.

The history of shisha goes back to the northern parts of India which was part of Persia. Tobacco used to be smoked in coconuts. Later, wealthy Persians gave hookah the appearance they have today; they were designed to smoke opium, and hashish. The hookah made its way from the Persian Kingdom to other parts of the Persian empire which also included India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, much of Middle Asia and Arab parts of Northern Africa.

Shisha - The word "Shisha" comes from the persian word shisheh meaning glass.

The term “shisha" is primarily used for water pipes in Egypt and the Arabic countries of the Persian Gulf (such as Bahrain, UAE, and Saudi Arabia).

Shisha is also known as Narghila in classical Arabic, and Argileh in spoken Arabic (Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, Jordanian accents).

A hookah (Arabic: شيشة; Hindustani: हुक़्क़ा / حقّہ; is a multi-stemmed, often glass-based, water pipe device for smoking; originating in India, it gained fame under the Ottoman Turks. A hookah operates by water-filtration and indirect heat. It can be used for smoking many substances, such as herbal fruits and tobacco. Depending on locality, hookahs are known as other names, such as a shisha/sheesha, water pipe, nargeela/nargile/narghile/nargileh/narguilé, argeela/arghileh/arguilé, okka, kalyan, gewat suckre, or ghelyoon/ghalyan. Many of these names are of Arab, Indian, Turkish, Uzbek, or Persian origin. Narghile (نارگيله) is from the Persian word nārgil (نارگیل) or "coconut", and in Sanskrit nārikela (नारीकेल) and it was made out of coconut shells.

[1] Shisha (شيشة) is from the Persian word shishe (شیشه, literally translated as glass and not bottle). Hashish (حشيش) is an Arabic word for grass, which may have been another way of saying tobacco. Another source states, "In early Arabic texts, the term hashish referred not only to cannabis resin but also to the dried leaves or flower heads and sweetmeats made with them".

[2] Hookah itself may stem from Arabic uqqa, meaning small box, pot, or jar. Both names refer to the original methods of constructing the smoke/water chamber part of the hookah.

Narghile is the name most commonly used in Armenia, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Greece, Cyprus, Albania, Israel, Bulgaria and Romania, though the initial "n" is often dropped in Arabic. Shisha is more commonly seen in Egypt, Bahrain, Morocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and Somalia. In Iran it is called ghalyoun or ghalyan (قليان) and in Pakistan and India it is referred to as huqqa. The archaic form of this latter name, hookah is most commonly used in English for historical reasons, as it was in India that large numbers of English-speakers first sampled the effects of the water pipe.
