Turkey's first gay-lesbian hotel to open in July
May 30, 2007
ANKARA -- Turkey's first gay-lesbian hotel opens in July at a popular resort on the Mediterranean coast, its manager said Wednesday.
"There are several gay-friendly hotels in Turkey, but ours is the first to be 100 percent gay and lesbian. It will not accept guests outside this concept," Faruk Ok said by telephone. "Part of the personnel is also gay or lesbian," he added.
The licensing of the 70-room, four-star Planet Victorya in Kemer, in Antalya province, where Turkey's largest hotels and holiday villages are located, was free of any bureaucratic hassles, Ok said.
Reservations for this summer came mainly from clients from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Spain, he said, adding that the hotel would also cater to Turkish homosexuals.
Prejudice against homosexuals remains strong in Turkey, although same-sex relationships have never been criminalized as in other Muslim countries and many homosexuals figure among the country's top celebrities.
The gay movement has become increasingly outspoken in recent years, capitalizing in part on European Union pressure on Ankara to show full respect for human rights.
Show respect to human rights and throw moral standards and religious principles overboard?
