I suspect he is spinning you a line to make himself look more sophisticated in your eyes. Why he should think that kind of behavour is sophisticated heaven knows.
Of course I may be wrong and there is another Egypt that I don't know where they do behave like this.

I think you got it in one bla bla bla; It is all fantasy on his behalf. And this idea of an openminded family is not like in the West. Think the West in the 50's open minded people were shunned and ostrachised. It is not a positive to be iopneminded ESPECIALLY sexually in this society.
I live in Luxor which is much more conservative than Cairo but have friends in Cairo and there is no way they would behave like this.
