Jealous stepmother slowly tortured lover's baby to death
Last updated at 18:40pm on 3rd August 2007

An evil stepmother was behind bars today for slowly torturing her lover's little boy to death.

Sumairia Parveen, who had begun an affair with her cousin after walking out on her husband, "hated" the 17-month-old she feared threatened their relationship.

The boy's father, Abid Ikram, 30, "stood by and did nothing", while doctors repeatdly failed to spot the abuse, a court heard.

Parveen showered love on her own daughter, but subjected helpless Tahla Ikram to weeks of agonising abuse in the twisted hope he would be taken into care.

The child suffered a litany of fractures and bruises as his limbs were "twisted and pulled", he was burnt with a cigarette and even had his leg progressively sliced open until the wound was so deep tendons and veins were exposed.

Many of his injuries were ignored for days, causing him to scream as his broken bones ground together.

His agony would have been overwhelmingly obvious to anyone with him, London's Southwark Crown Court was told.

He was repeatedly taken to hospital but the fact each visit meant a different doctor may explain why his mounting injuries were not recognised as systematic abuse.

Various accounts were also given as to how he had been injured - falling down the stairs, slipping off a chair and playing with other children.

Jeremy Donne, QC, prosecuting, said the truth was totally different and could not have been more horrific. The child - who months earlier been in temporary care after police found him home alone - finally died in his cot, next to his father's double bed, on September 6 last year.

Ambulance staff called to the family home in Acton, west London, found the little boy cold, stiff and without a single sign of life.

But while the child's father appeared distressed, Parveen, 24, "stood back... quite calm".

His many injuries included a broken thigh and shin and three fractured ribs. A doctor who examined him said he looked like a car accident victim.

A post-mortem examination discovered marrow fat deposits from the untreated broken thigh had invaded his lungs, starved his brain of oxygen and caused death.

Both Ikram and Parveen, of Cheltenham Place, Ealing, west London, spent more than a week protesting their innocence.

While he wept as he told the court he "would never have hurt my son", she tearfully insisted she had loved him as if he "was my own".

But those trying the case took just six hours over two days to unanimously decide they were lying. Parveen - who had her accomplice's baby in prison - was cleared of murder but convicted of "causing or allowing the child's death".

She wept as the guilty verdict was announced.

Ikram, who once beat his son with a plastic cricket bat on her orders, had also faced a murder charge but after legal argument he was formally acquitted of it on the judge's directions.

He, too, was convicted of the "causing or allowing" count and was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice for sending his lover to Pakistan after his son's death.

He appeared stunned at the verdicts.

They will be dealt with on September 7 following the preparation of pre-sentence reports.

The pair, who each face up to 14 months jail, were both remanded in custody.

14 monthes a piece???!! Where is the justice for that little boy?! [Mad] [Mad] I swear, that boy's death might as well have been considered meaningless given the "severity" of the punishment meted out for that horrible couple. It really makes one inquire as to how much children are truly regarded and valued within a society. [Frown]
