Can anybody give me advice whether they consider it more important to a muslim to marry in MOJ or to have an Islamic marriage? Also, advice on when I visit his village and what I can expect.

difference between marriage in MOJ and islamic marriage is the islamic marriage request that the man and woman be muslims and immam documented the marriage , but if the wife have another religion then they go to MOJ
both is documented marriage. Conditions of marriage in Islam: the witnesses, publicity, dowry, its the same conditions when you marry in MOJ. my advice to you when visit his village,it's depend on where is his village, but any how wearing decent clothes, be very simple,Respected him front of his family its more important thing

to marry Islamically yes you have to be Muslim and produce a bit of paper to say you are. I am Muslim and was before I met my hubby but dont have a bit of paper saying im Muslim and of course it doesnt say it in my passport, being British. Unless you find a more 'forward thinking' Imam where your hubby lives as really he is allowed to marry a Christian anyway!

yes tina they can. Apparently I would have to go to al azhar in Cairo and do my shahadah again, (now almost 7 years later) so I get a bit of paper. Or I could go back to UK and get the place I did my original shahadah to give me a bit of paper, coz of course I am only 'half' a muslim until I have a bit of paper

My question was not in relation to applying for visa or anything else.
Just a general enquiry as to what opinions of muslims are in relation to either kind of marriage.
I am a western woman and have muslim guy, he would like us to have an islamic marriage.

The islamic marriage is the important one for a muslim, the MOJ just gives you the papers to make life much easier.
Last year I visited a friend's village and stayed for a few days. I think you will enjoy it if you don't mind a few less creature comforts. I learnt how to bake bread with her mother sat among the ducks and chicken's. They taught me how to milk the cow at which we all ended up in hysterical laughter and her father took me for long walks around the farms. People were very friendly and curious to meet me so I did end up being taken from home to home alot and as usual being stuffed with food. Meals were always with the family sat on the floor, but with fresh food from the farms very good. You will probably find they will go out of their way to make you feel welcome and that you have everything you need. Make sure you dress very conservatively and remember if the farm is in the North it can be very cold this time of year but the Mozzies will still be around.

That sounds lovely Penny.
Sherri - IMO the islamic marriage is the most important thing for a muslim, or it SHOULD be, with family friends being told and it announced at the mosque.

Penny, that sounds like my kind of thing. I love it even more when the language barrier is high but you still manage to communicate and laugh through the night.

although this has not been my experience, I have to agree that this ihas to be what the majority of Egyptian life is like here, considering the 80+million pop.
This is in fact the 'real' way of life for most.
It's a shame that here on ES we only hear about the 1% of Egyptian life that is not the norm, with decisions being taken based on that 1%.
Nice story.

It's more of a description of how rural life is, which is what Sherri was trying to get an idea of. City life is very different but still real life. In a way I have the best of both worlds where we live in that its in a village but just outside a city so you can get the best ( and worst) of both. The place I am talking about above was in the Nile Delta so yes its was very representative of what is normal life for a very large percentage of the population.
Ferret the laughter was because I was singing English songs to the Gamoosa while trying to milk her...not sure I can cross the language barrier with a cow
