Bomb technicians in unincorporated Escondido, California, continued working Wednesday inside the house of a man who held "the largest" cache of certain homemade explosives ever found in one place in the United States, authorities said.
Authorities have already recovered eight or nine pounds of hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, or HMTD, an explosive powder that suicide bombers and terrorists have used around the globe, San Diego County Assistant Sheriff Ed Prendergast said.
Police believe the home also contains pentaerythritol tetranitrate, or PETN, another explosive that was used in the 2001 shoe bomber plot and during October's cargo-plane bombing attempt, Prendergast said.
George Djura Jakubec, 54, a computer software consultant who rents the house, is being held in lieu of $5 million bail and has been charged with 28 felonies: 13 counts of possession of a destructive device, 13 of possession of ingredients to make a destructive device and two of robbery.
The two robbery charges are related to a pair of bank heists, said Steve Walker, a spokesman for the San Diego County district attorney's office. Jakubec pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday, he said.
Jakubec is a Serbian national who is a naturalized U.S. citizen, and authorities are investigating his background, Prendergast said. Jakubec is also on probation for a burglary conviction in 2009, court records showed.
One explosives expert described eight or nine pounds of HMTD as "devastating."
"If you had eight or nine pounds in a vehicle in a street, you have a pretty large and devastating car bomb," said James Cavanaugh, a retired special agent of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
"Inside a home, it's going to blow all the windows and doors and walls out, but it's not going to destroy the neighborhood. People would be in danger if they were immediately in front of the house or adjacent to the house," he added. " It would be almost like a gas explosion."
Outside court this week, Jakubec's wife, Marina Ivanova, was distraught.
"He's crazy," she told camera crews. "I think he lost his mind. He lost mind or something.... I know that he was collecting, obsessively collecting stuff."
Bomb technicians must work slowly inside the house because the slightest friction -- such as opening a drawer -- could ignite the explosives, he said.
Jakubec appears to be a hoarder, and the clutter of paper and boxes in the house makes the hunt for explosives more difficult, Prendergast said. Bomb crews are wearing less gear so they can move about the house without brushing up against anything and accidentally igniting the explosives, he said.
"We are wearing some protective gear, not the big protective gear" that resembles moon suits, Prendergast said. "It's just not practical for this operation."
Authorities discovered the explosives last Thursday after a gardener was injured when he unwittingly set off some of the HMTD powder in the back yard, Prendergast said. The blast went up one side of his body, from lower leg to head, he said.
"We believe he scraped against some of the powder in the yard, and the friction caused it to explode," Prendergast said. "Apparently the suspect was experimenting in his yard, and some of it got left over" on the ground, he added.
Authorities then found the HMTD, which was in six jars that had apparently been moved out of the house and into the back yard, Prendergast said.
Authorities had to evacuate two nearby houses and even closed down the southbound lanes of nearby Interstate 15 for three hours Friday, he said. The two adjacent houses remained evacuated Wednesday, he said.
"It's amazing he didn't blow himself up. He must have some knowledge of how to do this safely," Prendergast said.
"Part of the story should be about the bravery of the bomb technicians and haz-mat team, for risking their lives trying to build a case against this guy so that justice can be served, and trying to render the site safe so that homeowners can return to their homes," he added.
On Wednesday, only two or three bomb technicians entered the house for less than an hour and seized a computer, blasting caps and other items, Prendergast said. The crew videotaped the interior and will review the tape later to determine their next mission, officials said.
In recent days, technicians found other blasting caps and improvised grenades that weren't live, he said.
"If you look at the video of this, you can see items piled on top of items. It gives you a mental picture of how difficult it is," Prendergast said. "Counter space and tables, every bit of space had items piled on top of items -- papers and boxes.
"We only pull things out that have easy access," he added.
Law officers have defined "a hot zone" consisting of the house itself and the two nearby evacuated houses. A "warm zone" is the street in front of the house, and a "cold zone" is the area beyond a police tape where the media and public are allowed to stand, Prendergast said. At night, after bomb crews have finished their work, the hot zone is reduced to just the house, he said.
"It's fair to say the immediate area is quarantined right now," Prendergast said.
Local authorities, along with the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are trying to determine how to search the cluttered house without causing a blast, officials said.
"That's a good question," Prendergast said. "We've reached out to local, state and federal experts, and we're getting information on how to mitigate damages."
Authorities believe another bottle of HMTD is inside the house.
"We have not removed it yet. It's too dangerous to move. Any movement can set it off," Prendergast said.
"We have a saying: We'll go as fast as we can but slow as we must," he added.

Charles Andrew "Andy" Williams (born February 8, 1986) is an American who, as a teenager perpetrated the shooting at Santana High School on March 5, 2001. In the shooting two students were killed and thirteen others were wounded. Williams is currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for 50 years.
On 20 November 2006, at about 9:30 AM local time, 18 year old Bastian Bosse (born 29 April, 1988), who had graduated from the school in 2005, entered the Geschwister Scholl School (a Realschule), firing several shots and setting off smoke grenades. Additionally 16 police officers had to be treated for respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation and 15 students suffered from shock. Bosse killed himself by a shot into the mouth at 10.36am. He was angry at his physics teacher Mr. Bronson because he had failed him in physics, and wanted revenge. He wanted to get into medical school and his grades did not allow it. Slobodian began firing in a boys' washroom.[2] Slobodian first killed fellow student John Slinger in the washroom. Charles Andrew "Andy" Williams (born February 8, 1986) is an American who, as a teenager perpetrated the shooting at Santana High School on March 5, 2001. In the shooting two students were killed and thirteen others were wounded. Williams is currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for 50 years.
On 20 November 2006, at about 9:30 AM local time, 18 year old Bastian Bosse (born 29 April, 1988), who had graduated from the school in 2005, entered the Geschwister Scholl School (a Realschule), firing several shots and setting off smoke grenades. He shot the school janitor and four students and wounded a teacher by throwing a smoke bomb into her face. Additionally 16 police officers had to be treated for respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation and 15 students suffered from shock. Bosse killed himself by a shot into the mouth at 10.36am. He had left an Internet posting and a video message from his parents' living room shortly before the attack. The shooter stated that he hated people and was taught to be a "loser" at his school.[2][3] He also left a suicide note on his website, which has since been deleted.

The Dendermonde nursery attack was a stabbing attack on the Fabeltjesland daycare centre in the village of Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde in Dendermonde, Belgium, at 10:00 a.m. CET (9:00 a.m. UTC) on 23 January 2009. The Vilnius school massacre was a school massacre that occurred at Joachim Lelewel high school in Wilno, Poland on May 6, 1925. The Brampton Centennial Secondary School shooting was a school shooting that occurred at Brampton Centennial Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario, Canada on May 28, 1975.
The incident began when 16-year-old Michael Slobodian[1] brought two rifles to school in a guitar case. He was angry at his physics teacher Mr. Bronson because he had failed him in physics, and wanted revenge. He wanted to get into medical school and his grades did not allow it. Slobodian began firing in a boys' washroom.[2] Slobodian first killed fellow student John Slinger in the washroom. Charles Andrew "Andy" Williams (born February 8, 1986) is an American who, as a teenager perpetrated the shooting at Santana High School on March 5, 2001. In the shooting two students were killed and thirteen others were wounded. Williams is currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for 50 years.
On 20 November 2006, at about 9:30 AM local time, 18 year old Bastian Bosse (born 29 April, 1988), who had graduated from the school in 2005, entered the Geschwister Scholl School (a Realschule), firing several shots and setting off smoke grenades. He shot the school janitor and four students and wounded a teacher by throwing a smoke bomb into her face. Additionally 16 police officers had to be treated for respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation and 15 students suffered from shock. Bosse killed himself by a shot into the mouth at 10.36am. He had left an Internet posting and a video message from his parents' living room shortly before the attack. The shooter stated that he hated people and was taught to be a "loser" at his school.[2][3] He also left a suicide note on his website, which has since been deleted.
William Michael Stankewicz in 2001 entered an elementary school with a machete and injured about 13 people. The San Ysidro McDonald's massacre was an incident of mass murder that occurred on July 18, 1984, in a McDonald's restaurant in the San Ysidro section of San Diego, California. The shootings resulted in 21 people killed and 19 others injured.
The Luby's massacre was a mass murder that took place on October 16, 1991, in Killeen, Texas, United States when George Hennard[1] drove his pickup truck into a Luby's cafeteria and shot 23 people to death while wounding another 20, subsequently committing suicide by shooting himself. The Salina, Utah, Prisoners of War massacre caused the death of nine German prisoners of war and the injury of 20 more. The incident happened on the night of July 7–July 8, 1945, two months after the German surrender. Private Clarence V. Bertucci (September 14, 1921 - December 1969) returned to the camp from a night of drinking, and relieved the guard of the tower nearest the commanding officer's cabin. He proceeded to load and fire a .30 caliber Watercooled Browning machine gun into the German prisoners' tents. Within thirty seconds of the start, his belt of 250 rounds was expended. Nine were killed and 20 were injured.
Salina was the home of some 250 German prisoners of war (both from Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS) who were being used as workers on the local harvest. At the time of the incident the prisoners were waiting to be repatriated.

“As news outlets and TV cameras faithfully cover Rod Blagojevich’s final remarks as a free man, I would like to remind everyone to remember why he’s rightly about to lose his freedom today.
While State Senator reminds of the financial mess in which disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich left Illinois, McHenry County Blog gives a TeleTubby Bye-Bye to half of JimRod, the Two-Headed Chicken.
“Through his individual actions and reckless leadership he not only brought disgrace to his office, but also financial ruin to the state he was twice elected to govern and protect.
“While Blagojevich may lament the fact he faces more than a decade in prison away from his family, I am lamenting the fact taxpayers 30 years from now will continue to be saddled with the bills for his unrestrained spending and borrowing.
“With the help of his enablers in the legislative leadership, Rod Blagojevich doubled the state debt, took numerous pension holidays and exponentially expanded entitlement programs.
“For six years, many of us in the General Assembly warned about the long-term consequences of these reckless actions that are only now being addressed.
“Although I appreciate those who say their ‘thoughts and well wishes’ are with Blagojevich’s wife and children today, my thoughts are instead with the countless vulnerable citizens of tomorrow who have been handed the price-tag for his irresponsible policies.”
On December 9, 2008, Blagojevich was arrested on federal corruption charges including conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.[5][6] As a result, on January 9, 2009, the Illinois House of Representatives voted by a 114–1 vote to impeach Blagojevich for corruption and misconduct in office,[7][8] the first time such an action has been taken against a governor of Illinois,[9] making him the second state official in Illinois history to be impeached.
The Illinois State Senate unanimously found him guilty of the charges of impeachment, and he was removed from office on January 29, 2009. In a separate and also unanimous vote, Blagojevich was banned for life from holding public office in the State of Illinois. On August 17, 2010, Blagojevich was found guilty of lying to the FBI; on June 27, 2011, Blagojevich was found guilty on 17 of 20 counts presented during his retrial.
On Thursday, September 29, 2011, it was announced that in mid-August, administrators for the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission had asked the Illinois Supreme Court to suspend the former attorney's law license, in a likely prelude to disbarment (which is usually automatic upon a felony conviction).[10][11] On December 7, 2011, Blagojevich was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge James Block Zagel; he must serve at least 85 percent, or more than 11 1/2 years, before he can be released on the federal version of parole, supervised release.
He began his sentence as prisoner number 40892-424[12] at the minimum-security Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood (located near the Denver suburb of Littleton, Colorado in unincorporated Jefferson County) on Thursday, March 15, 2012, after saying a final goodbye to his supporters at his Chicago residence the day before. He is the latest of several Illinois governors and other prominent state politicians to be incarcerated. Currently, his predecessor as governor, Republican George Ryan, is also serving a prison sentence of 6 1/2 years as a result of the (commercial) "licenses-for-bribes" scandal at the Federal Correctional Institution, Terre Haute, Indiana.

Maryland man who called himself 'joker' still being evaluated
Washington (CNN) -- Investigators have uncovered no evidence to suggest a Maryland man taken in custody after allegedly threatening his workplace had acquired weapons illegally, a law enforcement official said Saturday.
The man is undergoing a mental health evaluation at Anne Arundel Medical Center, officials said. The evaluation could take a week, according to Julie Parker, spokeswoman for Prince George's County police.
County authorities directed reporters to an official Twitter feed that identified the man as Neil Prescott. The post by the county state's attorney's office said no formal charges have been filed.
The employee was in the process of being fired and was taken into custody Friday after a phone conversation with a supervisor, police said. According to police, the man called himself a "joker" and then said, "I'm gonna load my guns and blow everybody up."
Police in the counties of Prince George's and Anne Arundel acted on the alleged threat and the use of the word "joker." The Joker is the nemesis of the comic character Batman and a character in the film "The Dark Knight."

Police say the suspect in the July 20 shooting inside a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, where the film's sequel, "The Dark Knight Rises," was being shown, identified himself afterward to police as "the Joker." James Holmes has been arrested in the shooting, in which 12 people were killed and scores more wounded.
"An individual who was in the process of being fired was involved in two separate conversations with his supervisor," Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw told reporters. "Both of those times and both of those telephone conversations he made significant threats to coming back and harming people at the business."
Magaw added, "In fact, he said, 'I'm a joker and I'm gonna load my guns and blow everyone up.'"
A search of the man's apartment yielded 25 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition, Magaw said.
Magaw said police went Thursday afternoon to the man's apartment in Crofton to interview him and found him wearing a T-shirt that said, "Guns don't kill people. I do."
Later in the day, a district court judge issued a court order for the man to be held on an emergency commitment.
"We believe this was a significant threat based on some of the mental issues this individual has, the weapon capability he had (and) what he said to the employees at Pitney Bowes," Magaw said, referring to the business involved.
Magaw said that, given Pitney Bowes' status as a federal contractor, the man could be subject to federal charges.
John Erzen, spokesman for the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office, told CNN on Saturday that several agencies are discussing possible charges and which office might file them.
A decision "will most likely be made" prior to Prescott being released from the hospital, according to Erzen.
In the aftermath of the horrible shooting in Aurora, Colorado, I find myself asking what it is that compels people to want to commit mass murder.
And…I wonder why so many of these mass murders are done by white men.
I know people don’t like to talk about race, and I know it’s easier to talk about black on black crime. While black on black crime raises hardly more than a whimper or cause for concern, when a black kills someone white, there is a fair amount of outrage.
But this mass murder thing: why is it that white men seem to be the primary perpetrators in crimes like these? Why is there still a sense of shock when it happens? How come there aren’t some studies being done to find out why this happens? Black on black crime has been said by some to be caused by the deep levels of self-hatred African-Americans have. Black on white crime is said to be caused by long-held anger on the part of blacks. White on black crime is credited to racism in many cases…but mass murder, perpetrated by white men on crowds of people, most of the time predominantly white, has no reason given, or at least I haven’t heard the reason. Have I missed something?
The latest alleged murderer, James Holmes, has murdered at least 12 people as of this writing, including a three-month old baby. He came into a crowded theater, released tear gas, and then opened fire. He apparently carried an arsenal of weapons, and he told police he had booby-trapped his apartment to explode. He came dressed all in black, and he apparently shot with abandon, aiming at nobody, yet aiming at everyone. This young man, 24, is, or was, a PhD candidate. I would assume he came from a fairly nice family, as “nice” is defined. So, what happened?
I think about the young men, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, who shot and killed and wounded students at Columbine High School; the young men, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, who blew up the Murrah Federal Office building in Oklahoma City, the young man, , T.J. Lane, who is accused of shooting students at Chardon High School in Ohio earlier this year; and of course, there was the horrific shooting in Arizona where Jared Loughner shot Representative Gabby Giffords and 18 other people in 2011…all white men, and I don’t get it. Why does this keep happening, again and again?
Could it be that white men harbor some degree of self-hatred too? Or is it they carry a lot of anger about …well, about what? If white men are angry, and especially so angry that they feel compelled to shoot whomever is in their way, why are they that angry?
Isn’t it a topic or subject or situation that somebody ought to at least look into?
My heart is so heavy for the people who were shot in Colorado. All they were doing was watching a movie, and now, some are dead, some are wounded, and all who survived or who will survive are forever changed. It seems like a fair amount of Americans are suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, all due to domestic violence, and much of due to these mass killings.
It just seems that the tendency of white men to express their anger and rage through mass murder ought to be a subject for study. It’s proper to be horrified when these atrocities happen, but horror isn’t worth a dime if it cannot and does not lead to serious study so that the problem can be alleviated or reduced.
There are just way too many mass murders in America, too many white men who punish a slew of people for something they are upset about. It’s time for it to stop. Past time, actually.

Take a picture of a person at different angles and with different facial expressions. Then do these careful comparisons of the features. The differences you find can now be used to build a case that more than one person was photgraphed.

If I say "I am white," most people in the U.S. would think, "That's obvious, of course you are." But the obviousness of my being white has been shaped by a history of cultural beliefs and practices and social, legal, and economic policies. My Jewish immigrant ancestors of 100 years ago were seen as white by the immigration and naturalization service in the U.S., enabling them to come here and become citizens. But my Pennsylvania Dutch and English ancestors, who were already here, probably saw my Russian Jewish ancestors as Jews, not white. As did my Jewish grandparents themselves, who lived and struggled in Jewish ghettos, not in "white" neighborhoods. I am using this simple example to show that how and when we place someone in the category "white" and the consequences of being in that category --or being excluded from it--is a complex historical story, one I refer to as the history of the social construction of whiteness.
In this paper, I hope to show that whiteness consists of a body of knowledge, ideologies, norms, and particular practices that have been constructed over the history of the American colonies and the U.S. with roots in European history as well. The knowledge, ideologies, norms, and practices of whiteness affect how we think about race, what we see when we look at certain physical features, how we build our own racial identities, how we operate in the world, and what we "know" about our place in it. Whiteness is shaped and maintained by the full array of social institutions--legal, economic, political, educational, religious, and cultural. As individuals and in groups, affected by whiteness, we in turn influence and shape these institutions. Thus, whiteness is constantly evolving in response to social forces and the constellation of people who are seen as white may change over time.
According to Theodore Allen, the knowledge, ideologies, norms, and practices of whiteness and the accompanying "white race" were invented in the U.S. as part of a system of racial oppression designed to solve a particular problem in colonial Virginia. Prior to that time, although Europeans recognized differences in the color of human skin, they did not categorize themselves as white. I will provide more detail later. For now, the important element of his theory is that whiteness serves to preserve the position of a ruling white elite who benefit economically from the labor of other white people and people of color. Whiteness, as knowledge, ideology, norms, and practices, determines who qualifies as "white" and maintains a race and class hierarchy in which the group of people who qualify as white disproportionately control power and resources, and within that group of white people, a small minority of elite control most of the group's power and resources. Not all studies of whiteness describe it as a system designed to economically benefit a small elite, but most agree that racial oppression is a key element in whiteness and that, as a group, white people do benefit disproportionally from the race and class hierarchy maintained by whiteness.
As individuals in the U.S., we are generally assigned a racial identity at birth based on our appearance or on the race assigned to our parents. Growing up, regardless of our assigned race, we are shaped by the knowledge, ideologies, norms, and practices of whiteness, which affect our self identity. In most cases, a casual observation is sufficient for an observer to see us as members of our assigned racial group. Those of us with light colored skin and certain European features, are seen as white. But some of us who are seen as white, through reflection on the nature of whiteness, may have decided that, given the current meaning ascribed to the racial category "white" and the unfair benefits we receive as members of the white group, we don't want to identify as white. This may take many forms, including both the desire to structure a new positive identity as white and the desire to eliminate racial categories altogether. In any case, there is a tension between (1) our self identity and our way of operating in the world and the ways in which we are seen by others and (2) the ways in which they expect us to operate. Much recent writing on this topic attests to and explores this tension, and throughout the history of the U.S. there have been white people who have engaged in similar resistence to accepting their racial category, although perhaps within different conceptual frameworks. Well documented is the resistence of many of those categorized as people of color to accepting the meaning ascribed to their assigned racial categories. These tensions, this cumulative resistence to whiteness, has an impact on the ideological, institutional, and social interactional construct of whiteness at any moment in history. However, within the confines of this paper, the focus will be on dominant forces working to construct whiteness, with scant attention to oppositional or divergent forces. This is, certainly, a failing in the approach which, without fully examining the complex interaction of ideas and practices in play at any moment in history, provides only an outcome-oriented picture of the social construction of whiteness.

Sikh temple shooting suspect Wade Michael Page was white supremacist CBS News - 46 minutes ago
Updated 6:18 pm ET (CBS/AP) OAK CREEK, Wis. - Before he strode into a Sikh temple with a 9 mm handgun and multiple magazines of ammunition, Wade Michael Page played in white supremacist heavy metal bands with names such as Definite Hate and End Apathy.
The bald, heavily tattooed bassist was a 40-year-old Army veteran who trained in psychological warfare before he was demoted and discharged more than a decade ago.
When the shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in suburban Milwaukee ended, six victims ranging in age from 39 to 84 years old lay dead. Three others were critically wounded, including Oak Creek Police Officer Lt. Brian Murphy.
Page was shot and killed by 32-year Oak Creek Police veteran Sam Lenda on scene. Lt. Brian Murphy, one of the police officers who ran to the scene of the shooting of a Sikh temple in Wis., was critically injured.

A day after the shooting, fragments of Page's life emerged in public records and interviews. But his motive was still largely a mystery. He left no hate-filled manifesto, no angry blog or ranting Facebook entries to explain the attack.
Page joined the Army in 1992 and was discharged in 1998. He was described Monday by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a "frustrated neo-Nazi" who had long been active in the obscure underworld of white supremacist music.
Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the nonprofit civil rights organization in Montgomery, Ala., said Page played in groups whose sometimes sinister-sounding names seemed to "reflect what he went out and actually did." The music often talked about genocide against Jews and other minorities.

End Apathy's MySpace page said the group was based in Nashville, N.C.
Joseph Rackley, who lives in Nashville, said Monday that Page lived with his son for about six months last year in a house on Rackley's property.
"I'm not a nosy kind of guy," Rackley said. "When he stayed with my son, I don't even know if Wade played music. But my son plays alternative music, and periodically, I'd have to call them because I could hear more than I wanted to hear."

Page joined the military in Milwaukee in 1992 and was a repairman for the Hawk missile system before switching jobs to become one of the Army's psychological operations specialists assigned to a battalion at Fort Bragg, N.C.
As a "psy-ops" specialist, Page would have trained to host public meetings between locals and American forces, use leaflet campaigns in a conflict zone or use loudspeakers to communicate with enemy soldiers.
He never deployed overseas while serving in that role, Pentagon spokesman George Wright said.
Page was demoted in June 1998 for getting drunk while on duty and going AWOL, two defense officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information about the gunman.
Page also received extra duty and was fined. The defense officials said they had no other details about the incident, such as how long Page was gone or whether he turned himself in.

Marc Dutroux (born 6 November 1956) is a Belgian serial killer and child molester, convicted of having kidnapped, tortured and sexually abused six girls during 1995 to 1996, ranging in age from 8 to 19, four of whom he murdered He was also convicted of having killed a suspected former accomplice, Bernard Weinstein, later proved insane. He was arrested in 1996, four years after the disappearance of his victims had begun, and has been in prison ever since, though he briefly escaped in April 1998. Dutroux's widely publicised trial took place in 2004.
He owned seven small houses, most of them vacant, and used three of them for the torture of the girls he kidnapped. He lived mainly in his house in Marcinelle near Charleroi (Hainaut), where he constructed a concealed dungeon in the basement. Hidden behind a massive concrete door disguised as a shelf, the cell was 2.15 metres (7 ft) long, less than 1 metre (3 ft) wide and 1.64 metres (5 ft) high.[citation needed] First arrest and failure of the system
In February 1986, Dutroux and Martin were arrested for abducting and raping five young girls. In April 1989, he was sentenced to thirteen and a half years in prison. Martin received a sentence of five years. Showing good behaviour in prison, Dutroux was released on parole in April 1992, having served only three years, byway of Justice Minister Melchior Wathelet. Upon his release the parole board received a letter from Dutroux's own mother to the prison director, in which she stressed concern that he was keeping young girls captive in his house - which was essentially ignored.[
Following his release from prison, Dutroux was able to convince a psychiatrist that he was psychiatrically disabled, resulting in a government pension. He also received prescriptions of sleeping pills and sedatives, which he would later use on his victims.[citation needed] Abductions and arrest
Julie Lejeune and Mélissa Russo (both aged eight) were kidnapped together from Grâce-Hollogne on 24 June 1995, probably by Dutroux, and imprisoned in Dutroux's cellar. Dutroux repeatedly sexually abused the girls and produced pornographic videos.
On 22 August 1995, Dutroux kidnapped 17-year-old An Marchal and 19-year-old Eefje Lambrecks who were on a camping trip in Ostend. He was probably assisted by his accomplice Michel Lelièvre, who was paid with drugs. Since the dungeon already contained Lejeune and Russo, Dutroux chained the girls to a bed in a room of his house. His wife was aware of all these activities. Dutroux killed the two girls several weeks later by drugging them and burying them alive at one of his properties in Jumet. Second arrest and failure of the system
In late 1995, Dutroux was arrested by police for involvement in a stolen luxury car racket. He was held in custody for three months between 6 December 1995 and 20 March 1996. During this period, Lejeune and Russo starved to death in the dungeon. There is documented reports that police searched Dutroux's house on 13 December 1995 and again six days later in relation to his car theft charge. During this time, Julie Lejeune and Mélissa Russo were still alive in the basement dungeon, but the Police failed to discover them. Since the search was unrelated to kidnapping charges, police searching the house had no dogs or specialised equipment that may have discovered the girls presence, and they failed to notice the significance of the freshly plastered and painted wall that concealed the dungeon, in an otherwise decrepit and dirty basement. While in the basement, officers heard children's cries, which they decided had come from the street outside.
Two months after his release, Dutroux, with help from Lelièvre, kidnapped 12-year-old Sabine Dardenne who was on her way to school on 28 May 1996. She was imprisoned by him, once again, in the dungeon where he had kept his previous victims. Third arrest and discovery of the crimes
On 9 August 1996, the two men kidnapped 14-year-old Laetitia Delhez when she was walking home, from a public swimming pool. But an eyewitness identified part of a license plate which matched a vehicle registered to Dutroux. He, his wife and Lelièvre were all arrested on 13 August 1996. An initial search of his houses proved inconclusive. But two days later, Dutroux and Lelièvre both made confessions. Dutroux led the police to the basement dungeon where Dardenne and Delhez were found alive on 15 August 1996. In an interview conducted several years later, Dardenne revealed that Dutroux had told her that she had been kidnapped by a gang but her parents did not want to pay the ransom and the gang was planning to kill her. Dutroux said he saved her, and that he wasn't one of gang members she should fear. He let her write letters to her family, which he read but never posted.
On 17 August 1996, Dutroux led police to another of his houses in Sars-la-Buissière (Hainaut). The bodies of Julie Lejeune and Mélissa Russo as well as another accomplice Bernard Weinstein were found in the garden. An autopsy found that the two girls had died from starvation. Dutroux said he had crushed Weinstein's testicles until he gave him money, he then drugged him and buried him alive. Later Dutroux told the police where to find the bodies of An Marchal and Eefje Lambrecks. They were located on 3 September 1996 in Jumet (Hainaut), buried under a shack next to a house owned by Dutroux. Weinstein had lived in that house for three years.

The wife of infamous Belgian paedophile Marc Dutroux, who let two of his young victims starve to death, has been released from prison 22 years early to the outrage of their families.
Michelle Martin, 52, was jailed for 30 years in 2004 for not freeing girls Dutroux held captive behind a secret door in their basement in Marcinelle, 40 miles south of Brussels.
Dutroux, 55, is serving a life term for kidnapping, torturing and abusing six girls in 1995 and 1996, four of whom he murdered.
During those years, Dutroux also spent four months in jail for theft, leaving it to his wife to feed Julie Lejeune and Melissa Russo, two eight-year-old girls imprisoned in the basement. Martin, herself a mother of three, let the girls starve to death.
Martin and Dutroux have been behind bars since they were arrested August 12, 1996. Under Belgian law, early release is possible after one-third of a sentence is served, including credit for time spent in pre-trial detention. And in Martin's case, a Belgian convent has said it would take her in as part of the conditions of her release.
The parents of the two murdered girls expressed outrage at the court's decision, saying Martinwas as bad as her husband.
And parents of the couple's other victims said they were shocked by the decision to release Martin early and accused the court of ignoring their feelings.
The ruling "came out of the blue," said Paul Marchal, whose 17-year-old daughter An, was drugged and killed in Dutroux's dungeon.
"I believed this would not happen," Mr Marchal said. "If Martin gets an early release, then who will they keep in prison?"
Jean Lambrecks, whose 19-year-old daughter, Eefje, also was killed by Dutroux, said he "was sure she would remain in prison, for she is as bad as Dutroux."
"She starved children to death," he said. "She knew they were in the cellar."
A court in the city of Mons granted Martin's early release request - her fifth in eight years - after her lawyers found a place for her at the convent and convinced the court she would not become a repeat offender. She will probably not be released for another two weeks, leaving the prosecution time to appeal the ruling.
Martin, who has divorced Dutroux, is no longer "the woman who was incarcerated in 1996," said her lawyer, Thierry Moreau. "She says her guilt will follow her to the grave."
Dutroux was a repeat offender whose first abuse conviction dated to 1986. For that initial conviction, he was sentenced to almost 14 years in prison, but served only three.
The girls held captive later in his basement ranged from eight to 19 years old. The case revealed shocking lapses in law enforcement, notably two visits in 1995 by suspicious police who saw nothing wrong in the basement and ignored a letter from Dutroux's mother, who was worried her son was abusing young girls.
Under the terms of her release, Martin will have to remain at the convent and be assigned a daily task. A plan to release her last year to a convent in France failed when the convent changed its mind following publicity.
