Cairo
He dragged his right leg limply behind him as he stumbled up the steps of the entrance to the Mena House Oberoi. He was panting in the heat and exhausted from the long, painful journey. The doorman opened the door and looked at him with disgust.......

A few minutes later a waiter came along with tray in hand, handed him the wine, cut the cigar, lit it and handed it to him. Turning to walk away he took a shiny silver object from his pocket and pressed it into the gentleman's hand. He took his glasses from his jacket pocket to examine it more closely.........

The gentleman kept on examening the silvery little thingy but he cant seem to remember what it was or what it meant......
He looked amazed at the waiter but the waiter looked around in caution as if to tell him to hide this silver object because it's their secret. The waiter waved at him & told him "later" as he's busy & has to wait on other customers.
Indeed the Silver object looked very precious.

Then it struck him, like a thunderbolt searing through a dark autumn evening. He shook visibly, and scanned the bar to see if anyone had noticed the transaction......only the barman busy cleaning glasses and a lone elderly lady sitting on a seat by the window were within sight of him. He sunk back into the soft leather chair clutching the little silver charm. Now he remembered........he closed his eyes and was transported back twenty odd years to his grandmothers house in Provence. She lived alone in this beautiful rambling chateau, surrounded by fields of lavender, since her husband's death. The local gossip was suicide, but she was not one for gossip, she believed he was murdered. He would never take his own life......she knew him well...........more than the idle gossips in the village. When she found him he was holding what appeared to be a tiny silver box, complete with lock , but No key! That's was what the waiter had pushed into his hand..............

The memories of 30 years before came flooding back into his mind. He loved this song so much because it reminded him of the love of his life - Melinda. But he hadn't met Melinda in England. Their eyes had met in the dining room of the Old Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor. Later that evening they had walked along the Corniche together, oblivious to the Egyptians who tried so hard to engage them in conversation and sell them stone cats and papyrus.

His mind drifted back to that awful night, his first at the Winter Palace where he first set eyes on the beautiful creature Melinda. The night they strolled along the Corniche, hands not quite touching but he felt her so close. A Caleche went by, then another and he stopped for a moment and wondered if he should take the rest of the journey back on the caleche.........then disaster struck! A passing car honked his horn and the horse reared and pushing Melinda frantically out of the path of the rearing horse he was knocked to the ground and thrown under the huge wheel of the caleche. It crushed his right leg. He lay there in agony, blood pouring from the gaping wound just below his knee. His groans were drowned out by the screams of Melinda trying frantically to stem the flow of blood which was forming a pool on the roadside........

He had awoken to his worst nightmare. He was in a bed in some strange hospital. People were wailing and crying out, at a distance. A nurse was beside his bed, changing a drip. She wore a white nylon overall, which was blood-stained. Her face was very white and her lips scarlet; the face of a geisha?! But he was in Egypt? He didn't understand a word when she spoke to him and the flies kept tormenting his limp body. His next thoughts were of Melinda. Where was she?? What had happened to Melinda?.....

It took months to recover from the injury, at times the pain was unbearable but as soon as he could he booked a flight back to London and to find the mysterious Melinda. After that horrific night she seemed to disappear of the face of the earth. All he knew was that her father worked for Scotland Yard and his name was Reginald. He was a widower, and she lived with him in Chelsea. As he checked out of the Winter Palace he asked the desk staff if he could have any contact details of Melinda, after a back hand bribe and he was told her name was Miss Melinda Montgomery but would not give any further details. It seemed strange to him that she did not try to find which hospital he was taken too?..........

She had to leave to england the naxt day after his accident? she visited him when he was unconscious & by the time he becasme conscious she left to Enlglan? But if she visited him when he was unconscious, why didnt she leave him a letter???
Melinda is a mystery to him, a riddle he must solve, a puzzle he must put together.

When he arrived back in London, he decided that he must find Melinda. He must ask her why she had disappeared on that terrible night when he had been crippled by a caleche in Luxor. He entered the room and was met by a grey-haired man in his early seventies. He greeted him with a firm handshake and Reginald Montgomery ask him to sit down. This room was also filled with artifacts from ancient Egypt and he took time to absorb the fabulous collection, wondering how this man had managed to obtain such a priceless cache. After exchanging formalities, he began to tell his story of the terrible accident in Luxor and how Melinda had disappeared. The geisha nurse entered the room, she seemed to be playing the role of housekeeper this time. She placed a tray of tea on the table and Mr Montgomery began to speak.........

He was obviously deeply shocked at such a question from Mr Montgomery. After all the English are so snobbish, that one could never, ever break wind, let alone talk about it. He decided he had better change the subject very quickly and asked Mr Montgomery when he had last seen his daughter, Melinda?

"Melinda is in Cairo", Mr M said. "Are you a friend of hers?" He then told him the terribly sad story about Luxor and then he asked him if his housekeeper had ever been to Luxor. "Why do you ask", said Mr M. "Because she nursed me back to health in Luxor International Hospital" "Not possible", said Mr M. "My housekeeper has been with me many years, ever since I began to lose my mind." "How did that happen?", he asked him. "I was trying to cross the road in Cairo in 1999, and someone ran over my head!" "How very strange we have both suffered such terrible accidents in Egypt, maybe it is the curse of the ancient Egyptians?..................

Reg Montgomery asked to be excused for five minutes and left the room. The geisha nurse/housekeeper entered and began to collect the tea things. "Who are you?", he exclaimed. "The last time I saw you, you were a nurse in Luxor Int. Hospital." Her chalky complexion paled even more, (so many years of abuse with 'Fair and Lovely' had taken its toll). Her eyes glittered and her scarlet lips began to move. "I am working for Hosni Mubarak" she whispered. "But it is a deadly secret, you must not tell anyone." "So why were you working as a nurse at Luxor Int. Hospital." "I am an undercover agent", she said, "It was easy to work at Luxor Int. Hospital, nobody asked any questions. We are trying to locate priceless Egyptian artifacts stolen by the British."...........

The doorbell rang at that moment and the geisha girl left the room to answer it. A few seconds later in stepped a bespeckled gentleman. The geisha girl introduced him as a Mr Christie. Both men eyed each other up suspiciously. Mr Christie took a seat and asked the girl to let Mr Montgomery know he had arrived. He was carrying an old brown leather doctors bag with what seemed to be a piece of orange hose pipe sticking out from it........The geisha brought some coffee on a tray and offered it to the men. Suddenly the room appeared to spin, voices were getting louder and jumbled, he was so disorientated..........like the way he felt when he was a child having an anaesthetic to have a tooth pulled..............He had a feeling o hands grang his neck and the overpowering smell of Ether filled his lungs, he thrashed about on the floor now, gasping for breath, he felt someoolding his legs as the other tried to cover his mouth with something...........was that coffee drugged?........was this really happening, could the geisha and the mysterious Mr Christie be trying to kill him? His mind was muddled, he was gasping for air, the hands holding his legs were in a vice lock and the pain on the old injury was unbearable........he drifted into unconsciousness..........

........It must have been several hours later when he awoke. There was a man leaning over his body and smirking at him. He observed the appearance of the man. He looked like an Egyptian, he was probably in his seventies. His clothes had come from a fine tailor, possibly Saville Row. This man was obviously very wealthy. He had jet black hair, which seems strange for a man of his age. On closer inspection he noticed the man had been applying something like black boot polish to the roots of his hair!! The Egyptian handed him a glass of water and began to speak......

Lie there Sir, dont get up. So he laid his head down on the floor. He was confused, dazed a little. The egyptian looking man was looking closely at him. Sir! you had a very lucky escape! We have men on the street trying to arrest Miss Mohammed as we speak. The man groaned, rubbing his aching leg. 'What are you talking about he asked the egyptian man' Ah let me tell you............ Do you remember the little silver box the waiter gave you in the hotel in Cairo? Well a very important man wants that box. There are many people very interested in getting their hands on that box! Let me fill you in. This little silver box was once part of the treasure of Tutankhamoun. Lord Carter took it from the collection on the valley of the kings site. It became part of his collection. He had a burglary and part of the haul was the little box. But the thieves left behind the little key in the rush. It changed hands many times from country to country until President Eid Mubarak got wind of it. He wanted it returned back to Egypt to the Egyptian Museum. At that time it was in the hands of a German Astronomer Dr Hans Evrywerr. Melinda Montgomery was sent undercover by Scotland Yard to try to retrieve it, Mr Mubarak had Miss Mohammed from his Egyptian Secret police Service also trying to locate the whereabouts of it. Miss Montgomery managed to steal it from the room of Dr Hans Evrywerr at the Winter Palace, but shortly after it disappeared from her possession. We believe the waiter knowing about its value stole it, and was planning to collect a reward if he got it back to Mubarak. There was a man sent by Mubarak to the Winter palace to collect it and hand over the money, and that man was very similair to you in looks. He was watched by me handing you the box and we thought all was safe. Then we realised that you were not the right man, you just fitted his description! Melinda saw him hand the box to you whilst she was sitting in the foyer and the puzzled look on your face told her you knew nothing about what was happening........... She then got friendly with you in the hope of retrieving the silver box, but Mr Eid Mubarak after being told of the mistake ordered you to be killed. That is why the Caleche went over you. Luckily it did not kill you, but in the panic Miss Montgomery disappeared and we had to send in an undercover nurse to find where you had hidden the box. You have in fact been followed all the way from Cairo! The man was astounded to hear this unbelievable story! So he had a box unwittingly having no clue as to the story behind it or the events which had followed............. So now the Geisha ( Miss Mohammed) and now this Egyptian Secret Service man were in the home of the retired Scotland yard detective Reginald Montgomery looking to retrieve the silver box and take it back to President Eid Mubarak and it's rightful place with the rest of Tutankhamouns treasures. Melinda was nowhere to be seen and her father upstairs mad as a mongoose! This Dr Christie was actually the man standing towering over him now, NOT a Mr Christie but a secret service man called Sheikh Mahanky. The geisha Miss Mohammed walked into the room and nodded to Sheikh Mahanky. It is done sir..................

not a sight she was used to living in Cairo! she turned away and a screeching and moaning came from upstairs!! the three looked at each other bewildered........it got louder, like a man with a low moaning tone......with short bursts of violins......deep moaning.pause........violins.......more deep moaning.......they all looked at the door wondering what could make such a terrible noise? Many things went through their minds had Mr Montgomery fallen from his bed, confused and was shouting in pain? had he fallen over........the suspense was too much and the Sheikh darted up the stairs to investigate........After a few moments he came down stairs laughing. It was coming from an old fashioned record player he said....tears rolling down his face from the laughter and relief. 'The old man is listening to an old 78 rpm record' he said. 'It is Omm Cartoon' singing 'My Habibi loves only me, but I sing like I am attending my mothers funeral' one of her most famous hits.......... They all laughed and went back into the study.............
