BEST FOR HEART: Camembert, 297 cals, 14.8g saturated fat, 1.6 gsalt Gram for gram it contains more folic acid than broccoli, from bacteria used to ripen it. Folic acid helps reduce heart attack levels. Less of an artery-clogger than stilton, a 40g chunk provides 30 per cent of a woman’s RDA, 20 per cent of a man’s.
BEST FOR BONES: Parmesan, 452 cals, 20.5 g saturated fat, 2.7g salt Just three grated tablespoons supply nearly half an adult's recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 800 mg of calcium. This is because so much milk is used to make it (16 litres per kg). This amount also supplies a tenth of your RDA of zinc.
BEST FOR SLIMMERS: Feta, 250 cals, 13.7g saturated fat, 3.6g salt Feta is around 40 per cent lower in calories than Cheddar, as it’s naturally a higher-water, lower-fat cheese. Though don’t overdo it, it’s still got significant amounts of saturated fat and is the saltiest of common cheeses.
BEST FOR ENERGY: Brie, 319 cals, 16.8g saturated fat, 1.8 g salt Surprisingly, creamy brie is lower in fat than harder cheeses. The rind is a good source of vitamins B1 and B6 — good for metabolising carbohydrate and protein into energy. Not suitable in pregnancy due to possible listeria bacteria that can cause miscarriage.
BEST FOR IMMUNITY: Wensleydale, 377 cals, 19.7 g saturated fat, 1.3 g salt Gram for gram, Wensleydale supplies as much immune–enhancing zinc as minced lamb. In a 40g chunk there's around 10 per cent of the RDA. Low zinc levels can lead to depressed immunity and an impaired sense of taste.
BEST FOR PREGNANCY: Cheddar, 412 cals, 21.7g saturated fat, 1.7g salt Safe in pregnancy (blue, soft unpasteurised, and white-rinded cheeses aren’t), 40g supplies more than a third of daily calcium intake, important for the skeletal development of an unborn child. Cheddar is also a source of folate — a valuable pregnancy vitamin.
BEST FOR ALL-ROUND: Edam, 333 cals, 15.9g saturated fat, 2.5 gsalt A family favourite with 25 per cent less saturated fat than Cheddar. You can shave off 35 calories by making a sandwich with Edam rather than Cheddar and there’s 84 per cent of your daily vitamin B12 in a portion. You need B12 for healthy nerves.
