How a glass of red wine can help cancer drugs be more effectiveBy Jenny Hope

A glass of red wine for women with breast cancer could boost the success rate of treatment.
The ingredient resveratrol which naturally occurs in red wine enhances the effects of a drug used to combat the disease.

The ingredient resveratrol which naturally occurs in red wine enhances the effects of the drug rapamycin used to combat breast cancer

Laboratory tests found the ingredient can prevent cancer cells from developing resistance to the drug, called rapamycin.

Although cancer trials show the drug works against tumours, the cells start to grow again after resistance sets in.

Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant produced by plants such as grapes, raspberries, cranberries and peanuts to fight off fungal and bacterial infections.

Scientists have been exploring its potential in reducing the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's and even the ageing process.

But they have now discovered the plant chemical - which gives red wine its colour - can make cancer drugs even more effective.

Professor Charis Eng, of Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute in Ohio, said 'Rapamycin has been used in clinical trials as a cancer treatment.

'Unfortunately, after a while, the cancer cells develop resistance to rapamycin.

'Our findings show resveratrol seems to mitigate rapamycin-induced drug resistance in breast cancers, at least in the laboratory.'

Her team studied the effect of combining resveratrol with rapamycin on breast cancer cells.

Their findings published in Cancer Letters demonstrates an additive effect between the two compounds on suppressing breast cancer cell signalling and growth.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women and almost 45,000 cases are diagnosed in the UK every year.

Previous research has suggested a glass of red wine a day can protect against breast cancer because resveratrol blocks the way oestrogen combines with DNA in a woman's body.

Resveratrol has also been linked to anti-ageing properties. The antioxidant is one of a number of so called 'healthy chemicals' found in red wine, called polyphenols.

The latest research also indicates a tumour-suppressing gene known as PTEN is activated by resveratrol.

Prof Eng said further testing was needed in patients, but the 'added ingredient' could be found in a variety of foods.

She said 'If these observations hold true in the clinic setting, then enjoying a glass of red wine or eating a bowl of boiled peanuts, which has a higher resveratrol content than red wine, before rapamycin treatment for cancer might be a prudent approach.'

Rapamycin was discovered on Easter Island in the 1970s, produced from a fungus made by insects, and originally used to prevent rejection in organ transplant patients.

It has only recently been considered as a weapon against breast cancer

But despite the potential for tumour suppression rapamycin has produced uneven responses in limiting the growth of various breast cancer cell lines.

In the latest tests the effect of resveratrol and rapamycin, alone and in combination, on cell growth of three human breast cancer cell lines was assessed.

Rapamycin, resveratrol, and combinations of these agents all inhibited cell growth, with higher doses proving more effective.

But even low concentrations of resveratrol and rapamycin were sufficient to induce 50 per cent inhibition in growth in each of the cell lines.

Although relatively early, these observations may suggest resveratrol as a powerful integrative medicine in addition to traditional chemotherapy, said Prof Eng.

Resveratrol is also available in supplement form, but this has not been tested in cancer trials.

In high doses it causes side effects such as insomnia, joint pain, diarrhoea and acne.

Before getting started with your screen recording, you need to specify the recording area. When you lauch Desktop Recorder and click the Record button, you will find that this desktop recording software provides flexible desktop recording options when you start to record desktop:
Application - Record actions on a selected application window
Custom Size - Record actions within a specified area on the screen
Full Screen - Record actions on the entire desktop
Which portion on the desktop do you need to record? The main principle of selecting the recording area is to make small-sized streaming movie to show what we want to show. Unnecessary portions on the screen recording make the final movie file bigger, increasing both the required time in loading and playing. So we will just select the necessary area for our recording. There are some rules for selecting the area of your desktop screen recording:
Record application window
If the software operating you want to record is in one certain window and there are few dialog boxs or pop-ups that show up out of the recording scope of the recording window, selecting this option is fine. Dialog boxes and pop-ups will only display in your recording if they are in the recording window. Anything which extends outside of the boundary of the window will be cut off. Try to run your application to see would it be OK to make the application window as the recording area. Also keep in mind that the default size of the publishing movie will be the same as your application window. To make it play in a smaller player with good video quality, it is recommended to restore down the application window and do your recording. Or you can change the output dimension in the publishing dialog box. What's more, you may add the zoom objects to zoom in to emphasize the details for the resized slides.
Move the green rectangle to the application that you want to record, and snap to it, then you can start to record desktop screen.
Record the custom size
If you want to record the desktop only happen on a specified area, you can customize the recording area before hand. Any operation like the mouse movement and keystroke on that area will be captured. It is easy to set the recording region and aspect ratio for your video. Do some recording rehearsal to make sure you getting everything you want to show to happen inside that region. You can drag the rectangle to position the recording area, or you can set the exact size by typing in the pixels data in the setting entry. By checking the feature of Auto Pan in the full motion recording settings, the recording area will follow your mouse movement to move around the screen from side-to-side or up and down while retaining the same size.
Click the compass icon in the center of the highlighted recording area and drag it to a new location on the desktop.
Click and drag a handle on a corner or a side of the recording area to adjust the recording area.
Enter the numbers of width and height, and you can change the recording area. When used with the Lock Aspect Ratio option, you can resize your recording area with proper aspect ratio maintained.
Recording full screen
This option is for you to capture everything that happens on your entire screen. Compare with small area recording, it will take up more computer resource and create a bigger file. However, if there is a really high resolution monitor for full screen recording, you probably don't want to create a video file that has to be played back at the same resolution in a really big player. If possible, lower your screen resolution before you start to record your desktop. For example, if you use the screen resolution of 1026*768 or higher, you can adjust the resolution to 800*600 and do you recording. And if you want it to show in a smaller player like 640*480, you can resize the movie dimension as 80% or 60% of the original one. So you can publish the video of a smaller dimension, but it could be a little blurring. However, you can add the zoom effect to magnify the important area of your recorded desktop to show the specific details.
