Mob turns on 'drug barons' 07/02/2009 19:32 - (SA)
Mombasa - More than 6,000 villagers torched the homes of four suspected Kenyan drug barons in the coastal city of Malindi on Saturday to protest against the release of one of them on bail, witnesses said.
Armed with crude weapons, the mob tried to seek out the four and when they failed to find them, set fire to their homes and stood guard to ensure they were reduced to ashes.
A Malindi court had released a notorious drug dealer who had been arrested two weeks earlier in possession of heroin and other narcotics.
The mob was led by local council official Ibrahim Abdi Athman who said the four suspects narrowly escaped being lynched.
"We are tired of these people because they have caused the death of 94 youths in Watamu alone since 1992 and more than 30 others are in critical condition after abusing drugs," said Ibrahim.
"In fact we did not have the intention of torching the buildings," he said. "We went to those buildings to kill the suspects, but when we missed them, we had to destroy their property," he told AFP.
