The Internet presents itself as a new paradigm for old inflexible companies such as recording and Movie companies. For a couple decades now these old school companies have been spying or, threatening, and suing citizens for copyright infringement, piracy, and licensing alleging that piracy is affecting sales.
The truth is, these older companies just don't have a clue on how to use this new world-wide medium as an effective marketing tool. Instead of moving forward and developing this new distribution model, they prefer instead to spend vast amount of resources and LAWYERS to identify and prosecute their potential customer base. With the large amounts of resources being expended, they cannot possibly break even using this reaction and in fact, make serious enemies of their customer base for their obvious greed and incompetence.
Who are the Record company and Movie house executives? Mostly conservatives. The same conservatives who in the 1980s failed to see the importance of DarpaNet (The Internet) and it's future potential. Conservatives were so lost in DarpaNet's real potential, they tried very hard to cut it's funding and halt it's development. That in itself tells one a lot about the backward mindset and complete lack of vision of conservatives. Had they succeeded in their agenda to cut Darpa funding we would most likely need be communicating via this medium now.
Recently, we had a Comic Book author whose newest comic was pirated and placed on a hacker site for free download. When the author saw his work posted there, free of charge, for anyone interested to download, lucky for him, he was wise enough to resist responding in the usual manner but instead choose not to over react like the RIAA, Sony, or Universal. Instead he took a different route that became an opportunity to increase the visibility of his product. This resulted in his comic book achieving record sales.
As a friend if mine once told me in Spain; If a company has a great product, it will sell. Over the years, I've become a believer that this is true.
