Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of Christ which once sold for just $60 sells for a record breaking $450.3 million at New York auction
Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi commissioned by Louis XII of France in 1506
Was in England for 400 years and belonged to King Charles I and 2 other kings
But it vanished in around 1900 and resurfaced in 1958 were it sold for $60 (£45)
Low price was because it was attributed to Da Vinci student Giovanni Boltraffio
Robert Simon Fine Art in NYC bought it at clearance sale and saw it was genuine
Yesterday Christie's put it on for $100m (£76m) but unnamed bidder paid $450m
Pablo Picasso's 'Women of Algiers (Version O)' set last record of $179.4m in 2015

Mena: It is amazing that Leonardo da Vinci small painting of Jesus Christ was sold for $450 million. This is a lot of money for an oil on canvas painting. If I had $450 million I would have purchase blue diamonds, pink diamonds, yellow diamonds and flawless hundred of carat white diamonds that are almost indestructible and last forever. A painting can easily be destroy by vandals, fire and natural disasters.

Salvator Mundi, an ethereal portrait of Jesus Christ by Leonardo da Vinci which dates to about 1500, has gone under the auctioneers hammer

 -
Christie's auctioneer Jussi Pylkannen, taps the gavel as he ends bidding at $400 million for the painting at Christie's, Wednesday

 -
Members of Christie's staff admire the work - the last privately owned Leonardo da Vinci painting

The Da Vinci con? Sold for £45 by an English baronet 60 years ago, it's now gone under the hammer for £341 MILLION... but some experts say it's not a Leonardo at all

 -
Sotheby’s said the artist was Italian painter Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio, who worked in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

 -
There is a lack of contemporary evidence that Leonardo (above) was responsible for Salvator Mundi

 -
Sold for £341m, the Salvator Mundi now has the honour of being the most expensive painting ever sold. This single rectangle of wood and paint is worth about the same as the personal fortune of the Queen
