Yes, Roddy, it is called The Friday Market or Yom el Ghoma Souk. It opens about 8 a.m. on Friday and runs all day. It is under the overpass of the Autostrad in the south area of the City of the Dead. You can find ANYTHING there, from live snakes to toilets, and everything inbetween.

I don't recommend women/girls go there unescorted. It does get very crowded and a low class of Egyptians attend this market so touching and feeling-up of women is common. So, women, go with a bouncer (someone to smack any men that try to cop a feel) and go early. It is mildly interesting, but NOT for beginners.

Gosh, I've been on this busy market only once like seven years ago and I do not really remember what was sold but they had lots of food, animals, bags, pottery; I am not sure about souvenirs. But the thing I wanted to get they didn't have ..... so I never went back again.
I believe the location was close to the citadel and the city of the dead, somewhere around there. But everyone knows the market so you shouldn't have a problem finding it.
Roddy, have a great shopping day!

Rod, If you are looking for furnishings and such, and want antiques, have you taken any time to go up to Alexandria to the Aterine (don't know how to spell that one) area? It is chock full of antiques. In general the vendors there know what they have and what it is worth, but you'll find loads of stuff in a very concentrated area of town. If you are serious about antiques for furnishings, you should spend a weekend up there once anyway.

Hi, You should go to Attabba area of cairo.
You will find everything you need here in these streets/Furniture shops/lights etc..
You will have no problem there, except its very busy/day or night but good bargins.
It is not far from the Khan Al Khali.
