(I posted this accidentally in "living in Egypt". It belongs here.)

I heard that the government invested in new low pollution emission taxis in Cairo.

How hard are they to recognise - do they have special markings - and how hard would they be to use exclusively?

Low emision taxis are news to me the ones i've always travelled in (the Fiats) have always been old smokies and some of the Peugeots are just as bad. Although there are some gas taxis but telling them apart. I guess you'll have to ask the driver to open his boot, to see if there's a big tank inside.

Actually they do have markings but its not mandatory. The government gave everyone, especially taxis and minibuses huge incentive to switch to natural gas. You can see cars with a little sticker with a picture of a green flame and a little inscrption in arabic saying it runs on natural gas. But not everyone puts it on and it gets peeled off easy

I would have thought that the marking are mandatory since the cairo area taxis are black and white (and have been so for a while), while the alexandrian taxis are black and orangish in colour.

Another sticker that I've seen in some of them just says NGV (Natural Gas Vehicle). As I recall, it is green and yellow, and it might be placed anywhere on the taxi... back window, front window, or somewhere else. They will put it where they think they need decoration.

Why would any taxi driver NOT want to take advantage of this?
And given the air pollution in Cairo, why would I want to NOT want to reward taxi drivers who do?

Isn't this an aspect of responsible tourism?
