LOL well actually we had an earthquake last week
measured 4.4. Very unpleasant experience but no real damage done. I think everyone is keeping very quite about it. Felt another small tremor on Saturday night as well. But I think you mean about the bomb last year. Yes I would say Sharm is about as safe as anywhere in this crazy world these days. [Wink]

it's as safe now as it was before the bombing. the numerous xrays, check-points, etc. that are there for show rather than real protection.

Yes, u know I slept with clothes on the next night, in case I need to run out quickly or something, but anyway compared to the area of Greek islands ad Turkey where they have about 10 small quakes per day, the one per 10 years in Sharm (hopefully) is maybe not so terrible.

Anyway, I arrived in Sharm around week after the bomb, because the "after" is usually the safest time anywhere. They still hold total road closures for more significant holidays, when they check documents of nearly male beings, or at least Arab looking male beings, although of course the history has also known many a beautiful young lady who have been nearly more adamant terrorists than their boyfriends or "mentors".

I don't know about "anywhere" but I'm not sure why you would specifically fly to come to Sharm, given that it is a resort destination that has has been specifically targeted and lives were lost.

I mean, I can understand Luxor, because it really is a unique place on the planet with all of its history. But Sharm....if you're going for the diving, there's other less developed and more pristine places along the Red Sea. Everything else you can find in any sun/sand/sea destination....so why take even a 1% chance when you don't have to?

That said, I'm sure you have a better chance of being killed in a car crash or being struck by lighting. [Smile]

I can understand if ExptinCAI advises to stay out of Sharm and choose a less inhabited or not so famous village or holiday centre in Sinai or the Hurghada coast. But there is no such thing as "any sun/sand/sea" destination for the period of Nov-March, for Europeans (don't know where YOU reside). All other destinations are simply either to cold, too far which makes travelling there either too tiring (long hours in sometimes multiple airplanes) or too expensive. You get dangerous animals, pickpockets, murders of tourists for money... indeed on that level Egypt exists nearly solo, the one and the only, for at least the winter half-year for us. Rest of North Africa is muslim also, anyway.

Also, I don't know how many people travel for history and sightseeing, the people from my country are mostly so tired from the work of upbuilding and the lack of sun and warmth, that they fly anywhere where they are allowed to simply lie on the sunbed for the 7 days, undisturbed. And we are nearly hypocritically culture-loving, at that, mind you, meaning that it is simply de rigeour to be "cultural" and interested in monuments, history, etc etc, but a human being is simply so overwhelmingly biological, that sun and light do top the list - you can live without seeing the Hatchepsut, but you go crazy without the sun and the daylight.

Yours sincerely (and otherwise agreeing on Luxor etc)

There were demonstrations yesterday in Luxor concerning the Cartoons which have appeared in European newspapers concerning the Prophet. There have been posters in some shops in Sharm telling all Dutch to go home, and all the shops have had their shelves divested of Danish goods in Luxor. This really is religious intolerance which affects the politics of the country.

If they throw Danish goods out, then presumably they want to throw out all the Danes. If that is so, then presumably they will not want anyone here from any of the countries who printed these cartoons.

Presumably, therefore, the Egyptians do not want Euros to come into the country? The message they are giving is that THEY DO NOT want European tourists. Let the European tourists be aware that there have been calls for beheading the offenders, and with an attitude like that would you want to come to Egypt! I dont think so! [Eek!]

well nevermind, i was there a couple of weeks ago and the egyptians were all bundled up in leather jackets while the russians were in their bikinis, so to each his own on the definition of "cold". it was - to me - cold. where else? dubai, cyprus, goa, just to name some off the top of my head. (and dubai was about 10+C warmer)

Ok habibi, I am talking of Atlantic and Northern Europeans here, not the desert folks. Cyprus is maybe so-so but it is also a very clearly divided island between the Greek and the muslim Turks (though they claim they are more illuminated there than mainland Turks and "go to mosque only for one's burial ceremony", it was on an EU tele channel where I saw it) so it is not necessarily safer, plus is closer to frequent earthquakes area.
And we do not all room on Cyprus, we would drown the dear island.

Dubai... who would like to spend holiday in a strictly limited prison-like environment? I for example like to relax when on holiday. And I like moderate heat, below oven temperatures. Plus there are known occasions when solo travelling young women have been sent back on border, because these Dubai guys have a wild imagination and very little knowledge of today's women in Europe, our well paying modern jobs (not what they imagine we come to do there), independent not-caring-for-men-so-much lifestyle, and - not the least importantly - our buying power.

Goa is the minimum 10 hours by plane destination, so it is out of this list, habibi. And so - there is Egypt and mainly Egypt only. The demonstrations will calm down, thanks god not the least to the African Cup that kept the young testosterone-filled males busy.

And we, Europeans, need be wiser than taking quick emotional decisions based on the moment's feelings (going - not going, friend - not friend), it is our historic responsibility at these times, because the responsibility always lies with the wiser, you may like it or not but so it is.

Of course, I, too, long to see and hear more of the word of wise people from among the native people themselves - the knowledge and wisdom of thousands of years - where has it disappeared or hides itself? Now it seems as if the islamic people all act like children, who are allowed to be all sensitive and emotional, while we in the West are expected be totally emotionless (while seeing our fellow native people being beheaded, our embassies destroyed and bombs set in our countries...) and act only and always very wisely, moderately and intelligently... Is not fair!! We also have emotions and some things that islamic people do (which are almost all we ever hear in media, because have you ever heard of any large-scale positive actions by islamic people? like goodwill or charity or helping other people or nations or similar?) harm our lives the way most of us never harm theirs.
So please allow us to be disappointed at you, too, as our neighbours who are our big mushkela, the way we never are for you, and from two ways of showing emotional disappointment - physically harming you or laughing at you - which one do you prefer then??

OK, I guess the muslim people actually believe physical harm is less harming than moral harm or laughing, but that only points out the weakness of your character, if you can be harmed by sole word or picture. Become emotionally stronger and less dependent of outside opinion! it is never a bad thing. About your holy book I really do not know, if the problem may be in interpretation even, you need to consider that even if the text itself is god-given, you are trying to understand it with your human minds (undoubtedly less perfect than that of the god) so maybe, just maybe it may have happened that yoiu have mis-interpreted the holy words just because your mind was not developed (yet) enough. So maybe from time to time you need to reconsider how you understand yout holy book, because you too, like all other humasn, I think become a little bit wiser all the time, despite all odds.

Anyway please take notice that we prefer to be laughed at, to being bombed or similar, if possible. Animals fight because they have no better means of communication, but we, humans, must do better, if do not want to be a disappointment to our creator. You have many talented artista in your countries, and long tradition of political cartoons, is not so difficult really to use this means instead of getting all crazy on streets and in the result harming mostly your own people and buildings.

Not very wisely maybe but anyway I tried my best [Smile]

I went to Sharm for the first time over Christmas, and I was utterly depressed by the place - no Egyptians in the street, no houses for Egyptians in Taba Bay - just bars, shops, bars, casinos, bars and restaurants. It is not Egypt - it is a beach resort, with a fence around it to stop the Europeans corrupting the locals, as happens in Luxor!. A very depressing place. Now, if you want a good beach holiday, ignore Sharm and Hurghada, but go south of Safaga, where the area is still unspoiled. The biggest hotel in the area is the Movenpick at El Qusier - which I am unashamed to recommend!
