there's not a lot of good graphic designers in cairo. get an electronic portfolio together of his best work (something under a meg or two so people can open easily) and his cv, and start emailing the multinationals. he can probably find a lot of freelance work.

As you are Canadian, you must register with the police wherever you live, i.e. or flat. You must also get a work permit which is very difficult to get unless you are actually in employment or have a firm offer of employment. It is not possible to get a work permit until you have at least an annual Visa. To get an annual visa, you are required to undergo and HIV and Hepatitis Test, renewable yearly. You will not be allowed to do a job which an Egyptian cannot do, unless you work for a foreign company who has need of your particular expertise. If you are paid a local salary, you need not expect more than 5OO Egyptian pounds monthly. The average wage for a waiter in Egypt for example is l25-l5O egyptian pounds monthly!

You should check with the Egyptian embassy if you wish to come here and live. It is virtually unheard of to get a "residency permit" Look into this very carefully, and you will probably find you will not be so keen. Charlie.

whatever charlie. there's tons of expats working in cairo without a work permit, who are here on regular holiday visas. only people working in govt, multinationals, ngos, etc. have permits. it's not like europe or the us, where it's very strict.
aids tests is a must for the work permit, but if you're freelancing without one, you just extend your regular tourist visa.

and if you're a good designer, and don't live an extravagant lifestyle or have debts you have to continue to pay at home, then your standard of living will be higher. yes you see adverts for graphic designers that pay LE900 a month, but anyone who can open photoshop here thinks he's a graphic designer. You would be applying more for an art director/senior position.
