ok, how does it work?

If I buy one from UK that is unlocked, how does the internet thingy work? Do I have to pick up on someones wireless to use it? Do I have to have some sort of subscription to vodafone or whoever for it? Does it cost to send posts, mails, etc like FERRET (help me) does? Do I surf free?

I'm using a vodafone-dont-open-it-as-the-sim-wont-work-anywhere-else-230LE-now-down-to-150le-cheapy right now, so basic language please.
