if you want to speak with someone who knows him, but you don't want to speak with a friend of his.... it's pretty clear who you hope to reach... and if you're not sure, then it's not right for you to be saying such things in a public forum.
what if his wife or friends of his kids read what you wrote here?

If he is playing around and lying so than it is good if his wife finds out. I don't think it is bad at all to inquire about him this way. It servs him right if his wife sees this.
