People with special needs can get married with the help of an internet website. The service is offered free of charge in a charitable gesture to help the handicapped find a soul mate.

This sites is a boon to this segment of society as conventional methods of introduction are unsuitable in view of prejudices, encapsulated in the Arab proverb: Go ahead with a funeral but do not help in a marriage. The people who run the site claim they can help anyone with a physical or mental disability get hitched. However, there is the small print: anyone wishing to register must fill in an application honestly and clearly. Some 367 (265 males and 102 females) handicapped people have signed up, but what is unusual is that able-bodied women express a wish to take a handicapped husband.Sociology Professor Samia Khedr described the site as “excellent” as long as the service is free and conforms to Islamic morals. As for able-bodied women wanting to marry disabled or partially disabled men, Khedr said the number of spinsters is soaring.“They won't mind marrying such people,” Khedr added.“Some spinsters sometimes adopt a religious perspective, so if they marry a handicapped man, they are provide their husbands with a much-needed service and they will be rewarded with Heaven,” she told the weekly magazine Al-Musawwar.But Khedr condemned the attitudes of some men wishing to marry handicapped women as it is usually up to fit women to fulfill the needs of their handicapped husbands, not vice-versa.“Such men seem to have experience sexual or psychological problems and prefer to suppress them to avoid social criticism.”Fouad Said, another professor of sociology, said the site would be a blessing to the handicapped, who often encounter communication problems.“This site might bring them together and create the necessary harmony for future marriage,” Said said.“Some able-bodied women would marry a handicapped person otherwise they would be condemned to poverty.“The chances that a 'mixed' marriage of this kind would depend partly on physical appearance and an ability to fulfill the husband's physical needs.”
