'Reluctant Juliets' tell of bedroom plight

The Egyptian Gazette

Mohssen Arishie Staff reporter

Men from Alexandria are being accused of forcing their reluctant wives to have sex with them, a recent study suggest.According to the study by Al-Nadim Psychiatric Therapy Centre, men from the cities of el-Minya and Beni Sueif, Upper Egypt, were said to handle their wives “roughly” during their intimate moments.

Some 29 per cent of Egyptian women admitted to giving in to their husbands' desire at “inappropriate times”.The findings are based on interviews with 257 women aged between 20 and 50. They described their men as “ lustful beasts ,” who are inconsiderate of their wives' needs.“Sometimes, the victim undergoes the shocking experience several times a day,” the author of the study said.Unable to suffer that humiliation any longer, victims appealed to the author to help them draw the attention of the People's Assembly (the lower house of the Egyptian Parliament) to their 'bedroom tragedies'.“Humiliated women call on Parliament to intervene and rescue them from their plight,” the author of the study commented. The nightmare of these women worsened after Viagra and similar products burst onto the local market.“The consumption of performance-enhancing substances by inconsiderate Romeos have made life hell for reluctantly Juliets,” the study said. The Al-Nadim Centre has therefore brought together a team of legal experts to draft a bill for submission to sympathetic MPs.However, disappointment was swift, as the experts said that it would be hard to prove who was at fault in the bedroom.“The burden of proof will always be on the woman, who would be loth to go public with her frustration and grievances,” the study added. According to director of the Al-Nadim Centre Dr Magda Adli, the proposed bill states that handling women roughly in bed should be an indicatable offence.Dr Adli also told the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya website that women who took part in the study complained that they had been forced to have sex with their husbands while mourning a deceased parent.“Unable to control his desire, a husband might attack his wife and even beat her if she refused to assuage her husband's needs,” Dr Adli added.
