pharaoh Look up pharaoh at Dictionary.com
title of the kings of ancient Egypt, O.E. Pharon, from L. Pharaonem, from Gk. Pharao, from Heb. Par'oh, from Egyptian Pero', lit. "great house."

Thanks wally,

In the koran we find the word "pharaoh" (fir3awn فرعون ).
I don't know wether it meant "a king called fir3awn" or it meant simply "king".

In classic dictionaries, it meant "king of Egypt", "dictator/opressor", "crocodile"....

...yes,

and it also survives in the Western Sudan
(IE, Wolof, Mande, etc.,) as fari, faran...= "king".
