The clue to the identity of this small religious minority survives in the art and archaeology of ancient Egypt – and reveals a most magnificent ancestry

I like the 2 lines written there in that link posted by tigerlilly
quote:

Their survival is a tribute to the religious tolerance of Islam. How many Islamic communities survived in medieval Christian Europe?

'Their survival is a tribute to the religious tolerance of Islam. How many Islamic communities survived in medieval Christian Europe?'

Islamic communities were tolerated in many medieval Christian kingdoms, including Spain, Norman Sicily, the Byzantine Empire and the Latin East. It was only in the early modern Era that the Muslims were expelled from Spain. The Copts in Egypt were tolerated at best, as dhimmi subjects. Their survival is more a testimony to Egyptian rather than Islamic tolerance. How many Christians survived in Saudi Arabia?

Also a bit offended by the suggestion that 'Europe' murdered 6 million Jews. 'Europe' did not do that, Germany did. The nations on the side that liberated the inmates of concentration camps (i.e. my own) hardly deserve to be lumped in with the regime responsible for them! Have we to share collective guilt with our bitterest enemies now? How can they publish this crap?

You are completely wrong. Not only Germans Nazi were committing atrocities during WWII.

Mitgegangen, mitgefangen, mitgehangen.

history was mandatory during the first couple of years in secondary school, although I don't remember getting past 1066, I opted not to take history after that as I had no interest in it, but it was Germany under Hitler that killed the jews, whoever the collaborators were with Germany it was instructions from mein fuhrer who gave that order, it's history TL.

I *Liked* the post as it pointed out rightly so that it wasn't 'Europe' that killed 6m Jews but Germany because it was actually 'Europe' that was at war with itself if put in that context.

You shouldn't take this so personally TL, yes there are many countries in Europe and outside of it that have committed similar acts of varying degrees, no one country on this planet is 'clean' of atrocity including my own, but that is not us that did that but our ancestors and it's not up to us to take blame and pay for it, neither is it down to you to feel blame for what mein fuhrer did as a ruler either.

My uncle spent 4 years in a Japanese POW camp but I wouldn't hold that against anyone from Japan either.

I doubt if the actual amount of Jews Hitler had wasted was really 6 million, I think its one of their lies, just to make Germany pay a bigger compensation to the Jewish state, I think the actual sum was like 2 million max..this was one of history's major crimes.

On a seperate note, the biggest reward given to the Jews was Palestine, another major crime for humanity that I consider to be a gift from the British Empire, something the Ottoman Empire had refused to give to the fvcking Zionists when they were taking care of business in the area prior WW I.

Ironically all the turmoil and terrorist acts that came up later on were nothing but a natural reaction to that gift..the middle-east has never lived in peace ever since 1948. [Frown]

When I was learning about this part of history in school and before I understood that Italy and Germany were allies, I asked my mother "Why Italy didn't help the Jews, they are so close?" Her response was "Because they killed Jesus". I had been looking down on the Germans only to find out that my ancestors were in on it too. [Frown]

My mothers family told her not to tell anyone that she was Italian when she came to America. I don't know how she hid it.... she couldn't speak English then. [Big Grin]

I think the Brits gave Palestine to both sides and left them to carry on fighting about it.

Can you explain "Their survival is more a testimony to Egyptian rather than Islamic tolerance"?

And was there Christian in SA when Islam came? Last time I checked, they were mostly polytheists and some minor jews. There are still remnants of jews in SA and Yemen if that can help. There are also christians in Lebanon.

Khadijah's uncle? [Wink]
oh and Maria the Copt. I doubt Muhammed went to Egypt to find her so she must have been there and considering the many references in Quran I would most certainly say there were plenty of Christians in SA then.

Speaking of Copts and Germans, here is a Coptic cleric warning the Germans what they have in store for them if Islam continues to spread there.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JJKDdqEl2Q&feature=channel_video_title

It may be that the Germans have become a little too tolerant. Muslims are not tolerant when they gain the upper hand. The fact that Muslims are barred from the Muslim holy cities is one of many indicators of the fact. The Copts have been treat as second class citizens in the country they one ruled, Egypt. If the height of Islamic tolerance is allowing a people to continue to live, albeit in degraded and humiliating circumstances, then god forbid I ever have to be tolerated by Muslims. To hell with that!

Egypt, however, has a long and august history of tolerance and decency. The Egyptian character has often revealed itself, for example in the famile relief which various Jewish patriarchs went to receive in Egypt according to the Old Testament, and the fact that Egypt was a place of sanctuary for the infant Jesus according to one of the gospels. Even the scriptures of a religion biased against polytheistic Egyptians could not help revealing their generosity and virtue.
