Democrats say Mr Bush is not engaging with Iran
A bipartisan group of US congressmen have put forward legislation to prevent the president attacking Iran without the authorisation of Congress.

The move comes amid concern at George W Bush's attitude towards Iran.

He has recently decided to ratchet up the pressure on Tehran over what he calls unhelpful behaviour in Iraq.

A second navy task force has recently been sent to the Persian Gulf and last week US forces arrested Iranian officials in northern Iraq.

Democrats have already expressed concern about Mr Bush's decision to confront Iran rather than to engage it diplomatically.

Recent events have only heightened fears about his intentions.

Containing ambition

The bipartisan group of 11 congressmen, led by a Republican, have put forward legislation that states that no previous resolution passed by Congress authorises a US attack on Iran.

One of the Democrats who supports the legislation said that a new resolution was needed because the Bush administration had lied so many times in the run up to the Iraq war.

But it may prove more of a symbolic move as, to become law, it would need the support of the Senate and the House of Representatives and to be signed by the president himself.

US officials have been playing down of attacking Iran.

The US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, who has been meeting Arab leaders, said that no-one wanted another military conflict in the region.

But Mr Gates defended the US military build-up as a way of containing Iran's ambitions.

Bush is no politician. He knows nothing of diplomatic solutions. His only concern is generating more profit for Oil companies and military contractors.
All this time I'm thinking diplomats are supposed to avoid war, not create them. What's the difference between what we have and a military government? Not many differences from what I see.

What you see meinarmer is the end of your nose. The definition of war is the failure of diplomacy. It takes two sides to negioate and throughout history if the teo sides cannot reach agreement then often there is a war. What you want is damage to the United States under all conditions and success for our enemies.
If we had a military government , as you say, you would have been arrested long ago. Oil companies and contractors are part of the reasson you have electric lights and are not sleeping on the ground. Big business has provided Americans with tremendous wealth and prosperity and will continue to do so dispite the protest of radicals like you.

Thank you for revalidating my point about Bush's incompetency.

I stand with the 80% of the world's peoples and leaders who all agree, Bush is an idiot.
Check out his sorry performance with all the companies his father set him up with. He mismanaged, and ran them all into the ground.
His bother Neil can't sell that crappy, Ignite software, and had to have his mommy write a check to force Katrina victims to buy it. They said they don't want it, and would rather have pencils and paper. LMAO!

You say I'm uneducated, but I'm not the one who thinks that Oil is used to make electricity. [Smile]

Hey, why did Texas illegally wait 4 years past the due date to free their slaves? Aren't they the last state to abolish slavery in the US?

No, you are an idiot. 80% of the leaders of the world support what he is doing. Since all you read are left wing blogs you do not have a clue what the real issues are. Foreign Affairs quarterly is a good place to start if you are interested in geopolitical facts.

Actually slavery was abolished by Congress in june of 1865 and later by the 14th amendment to the constitution. Further, the state was under union occupation four years after the war and was ruled by an imposed government. You need to read a little now and then.
