Britain today basked in temperatures hotter than Bermuda - but April showers are set to sweep in this week.

As sun-seekers across the country revelled in temperatures well above the seasonal average, forecasters warned of a cooler and wetter period to come.

Today, Scotland saw a high temperature of 22.6C which was recorded in Aboyne, while in Lake Bala, Wales, 20.9C was recorded.

But sun-lovers who flocked to the beach in Blackpool had to be rescued after they were cut off from the shore when the tide came in

The Lytham Rescue Team were called at around 2pm when the tide swept in and left 70 people stranded near Blackpool's South Pier.

The Lancashire resort's Beach Patrol and RNLI Lifeboat helped them back to shore.

With other incidents, the total rescues handled by Liverpool Coastguard station today numbered 93, officials said.

Liverpool Coastguard Watch Manager Su Daintith said: 'But just two minutes spent checking the tide times could mean the difference between a carefree day and a Coastguard Team coming to your rescue.'

'It will be the south east that hangs on to the more settled weather but many areas will see rain and April showers particularly in the north and west.

'This is a result of cooler air coming in from the north-west.'

Today's sizzling temperatures came on the fifth day of a hot spell that has warmed the country since last Wednesday.

Last week's highest temperature reached a staggering 24C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, making it hotter there than Barcelona, Crete and Cyprus.

Blue skies blazed across much of the rest of the country, with sun worshippers in St James’s Park, London, basking in temperatures of 23c (73f).

The beaches of Bridlington, East Yorkshire, baked in temperatures of 22c (72f) and even Aberdeen abandoned its usual chill to manage 20c (68f).

Britain's unseasonally high temperatures made it the hottest April on record. Millions of people dusted off the barbecues or flocked to coasts while others took to parks to enjoy the sun.

But it seems that there will be soon be a return to the kind of heavy April showers that are expected at this time of the year.

They said that some of the showers will be quite heavy, and will fall as hail at times, as the temperatures become cooler as the rain clears.
