I ran into this delightful book by J. Fleishner yesterday, and could not put it down. Such delicious gossip about poor Mary Todd Lincoln and her Black dress maker. Information about light skinned Blacks who looked down on their blacker brethren, too. Very tongue-in-cheek written, with the right amount of camp, that Americans do so well: pitting Mary’s low-cut, extravagantly decorated silk dresses against the vagaries of the American abolitionist movement and civil war. Absolutely divine.
