Rule #8: Be careful when reviving an old thread. If bumping an old thread try to limit it to threads no older than a few months to a year tops. Any older and its better to create a new thread.
I believe this rule is unnecessary because we often refer to old threads because someone may be bringing up a subject we have already discussed.
You not liking the rule does not make it censorship. People having free reign to do whatever is a large part of the forums current problems. If a topic has gone a year or more without any further posts there is little reason to bump it out of nowhere. If new information on an old topic comes one could always start a new thread with the new information and any background information to bring people up to speed rather than bumping a very old thread.
Also, this will be on a case by case basis. Threads like Zarahan's Nile Valley Database would be an obvious exception (though such threads are likely to be pinned anyway)
