We are living in a modern technological, rational and Information Age there is no need to follow those backward Middle Age practice.

Criticisms of Female Genital Mutilation, which should be correctly described as Female Circumcision should not be mixed up with criticisms of Islam.
Christians and Animists in African countries also practice it. Using it as a stick with which to beat Islam specifically is wrong.
You could argue that traditions which should be ended are hard to change once when they are expressed in written Islamic teachings, but that is a feature of Islam which warrants fundamental reconsideration right across the board and not just in relation to horrendous practices such as FGC.
