You can go by taxi in the convoy to Abydos and Dendera in one day. Think the price for it would be about 200-300LE for the car, and maybe 2-3 passengers. However you get a very limited time in the temples.
A better way to see Abydos, is to take the train from Luxor to El Badariya? and then a taxi from there to the temple. Train fare is about 52LE return, first class.
You will have an escort for thejourney between the station and the temple, of course, but when we went we had 2 1/2 undisturbed hours at Abydos - just 2 of us in the whole temple. Much better than a convoy, where you get 45mins to 1 hour.
