We will be making our first independent visit to Egypt in September. Someone told us that we need to register with the police at each town where we stay. Is this true and if so, what is the correct procedure?

It is not necessary you can freely travel around Egypt independantly without any need for this. If you were to register in every place you would end up wasting 1/2 day each time.

Canuck, this is not true- you don't need to do anything like that in egypt. Once you have a visa to Egypt, you can visit anywhere in the country,(hotel or not) as long as it's not expired, you're free to travel all over the place.. Enjoy the sunshine most of all!

It is true that all tourist establishments have to register their guests with the police. It is a painless procedure and many guests are not even aware it happens but it is the law.
And foreigners are not free to travel everywhere, there are certian restrictions like what trains you can buy tickets for, maximum number of tourists in a local bus, having to travel in convoy between certain destinations. None of these affect anyones enjoyment of their holiday and they are there to ensure safety of foreigners in Egypt.
