I think i got it. They include the largest amount of countries so that those countries feel culturaly bound to Europe rather than to other influences.

You mean for example in the case of Israel ? Feeling more culturally bound to Europe than the MIddle East?

Does anyone actually take the Eurovision song contest seriously It was always treated as such a joke when I was still in the UK and the worst possible songs were always entered. It has never represented the best music of any country!!

Of course it doesn't depend on how many people live in which country. Each country has the same influence on the result as the next one. Be they Luxemborg or Germany.
But what do you think? Would Egypt be interested in joining?

Egypt can't join Eurovision. They have a long way to achieve so that they can take part in Eurovision. Instead they should do an Arabvision TV show.

Last year Lebanon had plans to participate but withdrew at the last minute because according to the rules all countries have to broadcast the whole show live - and Lebanon apparantely had some problem showing Israel's song - so they had to withdraw!

The Eurovision is something many Europeans enjoy and it has totally different standards for songs and performers then any other competition. It has also nothing to do with popularity of songs in their own country.
It's a form of Olimpic Games where everyone is trying to win, and be liked by majority of countries regardless of differences in the taste, so it's not so easy to win, but more importantly people like to participate.
