I would really love to help my boyfriend out by having air con installed in his house, this way i can see that my money has done some good for his family as well, all i need to know is how much it will be, can anyone give me a price of how much it costs in general, i will be going back out in January and want to be able to get it done while i am there.

I have two airconditioners (including heating - Cairo gets cold in the winter!) - the bigger one cost about 3000-3500 LE and the smaller one about 2000LE. (PS - my aircons are a Unionaire to cool a largish sitting room and a Americool to cool a bedroom)
You can get cheaper if you don't need heating (if you're going to be living in Luxor say). Depending on other factors you might want to think about ceiling fans instead - the cost of electricity for running AC might be relatively high for the family. Running my aircon for about 10-12 hours a day in Cairo last week, I was using about 17 units of electricity a day (probably 15 of them on the AC) and its something like 8pt a unit - about 36LE a month.

Can you explain the difference between a window unit and a split unit and which do you think is the most efficient at cooling the room. Also any idea of the approximate costs of installation?

Installation comes included in the price you just pay tips and for cement to fill any holes. Window unit is when they cut a big chunk out of your wall and push a box unit in it. It goes from inside to outside in one unit. Split unit has 2 units. One big box affixed to the wall outside and another slimline unit inside usually fitted above a patio door. Split units are less messy, nicer to look at. Window units are just like big square boxes fixed flush to the wall. Both work well if you chose the right capacity. Unionaire is made in Egypt and is the best. It carries a 5 year guarantee and because it is Egyptian will get fixed next day. Do not buy Power. Sharp is virtually silent. Americool is part of Unionaire and is very good too.
Get one with heating option!

I disagree about Union Aire being the best and getting it fixed the next day. We started calling in April (prior to the heat), to get them to come out to do the maintenance. After mega phone calls and mega appts set up (all to be broken), we FINALLY got them here last week. I have been hearing bad things from lots of people about Union Aire also. So beware.
and I agree about possibly re-thinking about buying them an A/C. They will probably not use it after getting their first high electricity bill. Its a nice gesture for sure, but they will probably only use it for "show". Fans might be a better thing to buy. And I just got my electric bill, and it was 85 EGP and next month I estimate it will be 120. And the a/c with heating thing is a great thing to have.

Yes that's true about the cost of electricity. If the family doesn't have much income anything in the 85-120 EGP per month is very high for them especially when their normal electricity bill could be only 12 EGP each month or so. Just ask about it first, I agree Jean, fans might be better. They can be a little costly for people with lower incomes here for the good ones but don't suck the power the air conditioning units do. Okay, airconditioners. Panasonic is world market leader in split-systems, but there are other good A-level brand names. Look at the energy-label. Inverter-technology is taking ± 35% less energy regarding conventional systems, and is able to heat and cool. Selecting the right capacity and type of unit ( wall/floor/ceiling-type), is a specialistic job, and there is a price connected to that. If you want to give them something good, it will cost quite a lot...

I have called Unionaire out twice in the last 2 years and they came out that day and on the other occasion next afternoon and had it fixed in under an hour.
The thing is it is an Egyptian company so parts will be available and you are dealing with a local company, and also supporting Egyptian products. Have to agree with Smuckers though about the cost and fans especially ceiling ones would be better option maybe. Maybe even a little heater would be appreciated in winter, one with low consumption. But if they have money an air con with heat option would be a godsend.

maybe its cuz I live out here in 6th of October as opposed to Cairo. dunno. but since we FINALLY got a maintenace man to come out & do it - Union Aire's office has called approx 6 times to set up an appt with us. very weird. We just laugh when we get another call from them. Just got another call yesterday. Don't think they have a good system in the office.

I think they`re just busy. It`s about 40°, so airconditioners are making long hours, and every error/failure comes out now.A company has a number of maintenance/service mechanics, and there are times that it is simply to busy to service all calls. Best thing to do is to let de airco`s maintain/serviced by the ones who installed them. They have an obligation...
