Hi everyone!

We (lady ferret, Salamanco, my-life, myself and others) were talking about a get-together event in October, who is interested and where to?

I was thinking of going to Minia sometime in October to visit the monuments of Beni Hassan, which I have not seen yet [Frown] . But I am also open to a camping trip in the White desert.. What do you think? which option do you prefer? or do you have other suggestions?

I am free between October 6th and October 11th..

Any interest? Please VOTE [Smile]

Oh, more details will be shared with the YES group around October 1st. depending on the final decision, we can talk about what we need and how we could proceed!

Thanks

PS: Those who vote YES, could you please add your name so that we know who is interested?!

PSS: This is a serious cultural event, if you are not serious yourself, please DO NOT VOTE. if you are looking for fights, please go to other threads!

Minya?? Not ADVENTUROUS enough...

Try Gilf al-Kabir. With some luck there will be media coverage available during your trip which might take longer as you initially planned. The news section is finally gonna light up again!! [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I will attend if the group is large enough and consists of more ladies, I am not camping out with the boys!!! I don't want a bad reputation lol...

I am up for both trips. I love Egypt and would be mpore than happy to see more of it and experience new things [Big Grin]

I know some ES people will be in town end of Oct so I will arrange an ES meet up for them... there are numerous people from ES in Cairo who no longer post here ...I can get in touch with them.

Maybe just another meet at al azhar as it is one of my fave getaways. I love the serenity and scenery. We could have a whole day meet up and perhaps meet there for breakfast then go off downtown and have a wander and get a felucca or something.

Minia

Between Cairo and Luxor lies one of the most important cities in the Nile valley, Minia.

Just south of the city is the remains of the ancient city Khmunu, later called Hermopolis Magna as the Greeks saw their god Hermes in the Egyptian god Thoth. So here lived nobody less than Thoth, the god of wisdom and writing.

On the other side of the Nile, Pharaoh Echnaton established the new city Akhetaten while one closer to Minia find Speos Artemidos. Here Hatshepsut built the first rock temple in Egypt, not far from the very interesting tombs of Beni Hassan (Middle and New Kingdom).

Just some information on Minia

Lady Ferret: I assure you that there will be no fooling around on this trip and any type of harrassment or violations will not be tolerated by the group.

I just want to make it clear up-front. We want it to be a relaxing weekend..

I wouldn't do that in my own country let alone here.

Bani Hasan al Shurruq
by Dr. Susan L. Wilson

A really neat, off the beaten track, site to visit is Bani Hasan (also spelled Beni Hasan). Located in Middle Egypt near to Al-Minya, Bani Hasan is one of the few Middle Kingdom sites (ca. 2040 1782 BCE, Dynasties 11 and 12) that survived the massive reconstruction of the New Kingdom. It is a full days excursion from Cairo (about 4 hours by train then a short drive to the site). Another great option, is to stop for a night in Al-Minya when traveling by train between Cairo and Luxor. Spend the night and enjoy the beauty of Al-Minya, the closest city to Bani Hasan. Before going, you should make arrangements with a travel agent for a tour guide and transportation to Bani Hasan and other sites in the area. This is another one of the places where you will need fast speed film because no flashes are allowed within the tombs.
Al-Minya is a beautiful city that has had little tourist traffic over the past decade, so you wont find the usual kiosks so prevalent at traditional tourist sites. Quiet and easy-going, Al-Minya offers a serene example of traditional life along the Nile. Here, you will feel life away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and away from the tourist centers visited my most guests to Egypt. Al-Minya has one of the loveliest green areas along the river you will find anywhere in Egypt. Take time to sit and view river traffic or take a short stroll along the rivers edge. You can also find places to get traditional Egyptian food in the city proper.

To get to Bani Hasan from Al-Minya, you will need to take a car, taxi, or bus for approximately 20 km to Abu Qurqas where you will get a ferry for the East Bank and Bani Hasan (this is why you need to make prior arrangements through a travel agent).

The ferry takes about 20-30 minutes to cross from the landing on the west bank to the east. The landing site is located not too far from the Rest House where you will start your climb to the tombs overlooking the valley. Dont forget to take some water with you and to wear good walking shoes. The vertical climb from the rest house is listed as being about 80 meters. Broad, deep limestone steps lead you to the distant tombs on the cliff face (probably only about on-half mile away, but it looks further).

The area is named for the Bani Hasan Arabs who settled here during the 18th century. In ancient times, it was the Necropolis of the Governors of the Oryx Nome. All of the tombs of Bani Hasan are Middle Kingdom, 11 and 12 Dynasties. The short version of Middle Kingdom history is as follows. The Middle Kingdom follows the First Intermediate Period, a time of disunity throughout Egypt. Dynasty 11 is generally listed as beginning in the First Intermediate Period. The Middle Kingdom, hallmarked by the reunification of Egypt, occurred in the 11th Dynasty under the rule of Mentuhotep I (sometimes these kings are shifted, with Mentuhotep I referred to as Mentuhotep II, and so on), who was the first king of that dynasty. After a series of battles with northern rulers, Mentuhotep I gained control of the whole of Egypt by the 39th year of his reign. Apparently, the 12th Dynasty began when Mentuhotep III (Mentuhotep IV) was overthrown by Amenemhet I, (probably the formers vizier), who ruled for 29 years. Under Amenemhet, the Theban god Amun began a rise to prominence. Prior to his murder, Amenemhet shared his rule with his son Senusret I for the last ten years of his reign. Later in the 12th Dynasty, Amenemhet III pushed south beyond Egypts boundaries to protect the southern border and safeguard access to trade routes and the gold in Nubia. The Middle Kingdom is characterized by being a highpoint in Egyptian literature and a revival in the quality of art.

Bani Hasan has some 39 tomb-chapels. Most are not decorated, so you dont go to these. In front of the tombs are the shaft graves of officials and servants, referred to as chapels rather than tombs since the burials were in the shafts in the rock-cut chambers. The tombs of Bani Hasan fall into three types.

Most numerous are tombs of the 11th Dynasty with un-columned single rooms and a false door on the inner wall.
Second, are the tombs with the delicately carved lotus bud fluted columns. Many of the columns were cut away sometime in the past, so there is only the top part "hanging" from the ceiling.
Third, the 12th Dynasty tombs consist of an ant-chamber with two columns and an inner room with burial shafts in the floor.
The main group of tombs is decorated with paintings of prayers written to Osiris and Anubis, but lacks depiction of the gods. The wall murals in Bani Hasan are among the first decorated with brush and paint only, a departure from the older styled painted-relief sculptures. You can also find full frontal face illustrations, which are different from older paintings. The paintings are well preserved and the colors are outstanding. One of the most interesting aspects of Bani Hasan paintings is the representation of recreation. My personal favorites are depictions of wrestling, dancing, and acrobatics, but you can also find juggling. Many details of everyday life also can be found on the tomb walls: fishing, hunting, weaving, war, bird trapping, voyages, and animal and bird scenes. It is one place where you can look at the paintings and actually feel as though you are experiencing just a little of real life in the Nile Valley some 4,000 years ago.

Ok, then put your name on the list if you did vote "YES" so that other ladies would know that you are coming and then they might join..

I think it is good to know who is coming

I voted too but like LF in the end I'm "maybe" as well because it depends when the trip is. It seems that when I am bored to death there is not anything happening but the minute something is goin on I/we have other plans for that time [Razz]

It does not matter if it is "MAYBE" or for "SURE," just put your names so that we know who voted:

Please correct this if I am mistaken:

I am Interested and voted:
1. Farstar (definitely going)
2. Lady Ferret (Maybe: depending on the participants)
3. Cloudberry (Maybe depending on the timing of the trip)
4. ???
5. ????

No, you have to have a western one to join... but I was just wondering if UK thoughtful had one.

You also have to be an expat to join, hence being an expat group. We go to expat bars and casinos sometimes where passports are asked for.

There are plenty of internet sites for generic meet ups (meet up.com)

Egyptians are not allowed in the expat clubhouses or casinos. Not my rules!!!

Egyptians are only allowed in the Clubhouses by special invite and have to be approved by the Committee.

It is an EXPAT group.. for EXPATS. Why would an Egyptian living in Egypt who isn't an EXPAT want to join an EXPAT group!!!

If a westerner is here as a tourist sure they can join...

Looking at the date now and nothing being planned as yet for certain on here I have made alternative plans for most my weekends for next month.

Sorry, but I am a busy ferret and like to plan things properly.

Maybe, but if a trip is worth planning it is worth planning well.

Don't fret, I am not always so organised, my life is pretty spontaneous usually. I just love my weekends to be action packed and hate double booking.

And you can't do certain things without planning. Even if you go alone. Esp here in Egypt it seems lots of things demand planning and efforts. Special things, I'm not talking about going to movies etc.

Hi everyone,

It seems that people are not taking this seriously.. Well, what should we expect of ES??!!!!

Desert means, traveling to the Baharia oasis, renting a 4X4 with a driver for about 700 to 800LE, it depends on how good we are in bargaining, which could be divided into 4= 200LE each (Well, if we managed to be 4), (price per night per person, full board [Smile] ). But I am not sure, how many are interested to go anyway.

To be on the safe side, I decided to go to Minia, Beni Hassan, Tel El Amarna.. A place that I have never seen and of course I can go there on my own if in the end nobody showed up to join.

I will take the train on Thursday evening, or Friday morning, (October 9th or 10th), trains cost, 2nd class 27 LE, 1st class 48LE.

The trip takes 3.30 to 4.00 Hours.

This trip might entail spending a night in a hotel.. (Not sure about prices there)

Hope that things look better now..

For this purpose, I created an email:

miniatrip@yahoo.com

If you are interested, please send an email.

Best regards

Hey, you are not getting angry now, right????

You don't have any friends in Cairo which can participate to travel with you??

I would think that some - and I mean here the ladies and Man Ferret included [Big Grin] - are rather uncomfortable with the idea of going on a trip away with a stranger and to top it off OVERNIGHT.

Hence I admit I did it but I was in my early 20's and I ended up walking the endless Corniche in Alexandria by myself and took the bus back home to Cairo. So much about adventure!!!

So but anyway I'd recommend why don't you meet up with several members who showed interest in traveling and get to know each other better? Organize smaller trips within Cairo and when everyone's more comfortable you do the longer trips insha'allah.
