Who but you?

By Dr. Abdel-Hamid Mahmoud

Who but you?

Wherever I look, I see you

The echo of all singing that dalights my heart is yours

***

Who but you?

A slight turn transports me towards you

I’m in the midst of people’s clamour and the world’s

But I’m yours

The sun rises and sets

But I’m constantly surrounded by yur glow

***

Who but you?

Your breath awakens

Flames of passion in my heart

Welcoming

Then, coyly turning away

She knews that my heart knows not what

Befell it

Your warm breath

Ignited your love within me

***

Who but you?

Your bewittching hair slumbers on ivory

Or is it alabaster?

It is a river whose rich auburn colour

Rendered my yellowish soul green

When I looked at my hand

After a long journey

I beheld a perfumed lock of hair

Descending

On your elevated brow.

***

A second Vision

By Dr. Abdel-Hamid Mahmoud

Let us share a cup of memory coffee

And let me for a while

Sip my past days

The thick vapour on my cup has cleared

To reveal two eyes that safely keep my secretes

I never abandoned my beloved there

Yet these two mirrors

Absorb our secrets

Time goes by

And I look into them again

To have a second vision

****

Let us share a cup of memory coffee

***

I love you

The lamps on the street

That sees none but us

Murmur the sweetest sounds

When we feel the warmth of the place

You start to melt away

In drops of honey as we kiss

The trees embrace our two swaying shadows;

The evening tune descends upon the lovers

In its fllimsy dress

And I feel the whole of the universe

Residing in my hand

As you lean your sleepy head against my arm

The day we parted

Thick vapour gathered on my coffee cup

My tears fell on its wall

You were gone

***

Let us share a cup of memory coffee

***

I leaned against the blessed wall

And with all my might I raised the holy foundations

My strength was my fighting sword

I heard a call for holy pilgrimage

And I obeyed

We each traveled around the world

And time went by

When we met again

The scents of all the cities met within us:

The perfumes of Cordova;

The fragrances of Damascus;

And the incense of Egypt

All waiting to be reaped

As I became sleepy

The cup turned in my hand

And the bloods of all Arabia

Were shed on its wall

It disappeared

And you did too

***

Let us share a cup of memory coffee

***

Alien winds pass you by

Spreading alien seeds in your land

Still, your trees are motionless

As if you are never enraged

Never bored

Never aware of that alien

Who intends to steal

Your palm trees

Your characteristic sunset

The scarf that lies on your mashrabiah

Wheals even from the young lads’ cheeks

O! when will you innocent wild flowers

Revolt

When?

Look out1

You’ll break our coffee cup

Look out

Broken
