But how were places like Tichitt being occupied by Mande speakers thousands of years BCE if that is so? Are you saying that Mande as an example of West African occupation were rare?

The Mande speakers broke off from the core population in Sudan and co-inhabited the central region of fertile Sahara with the Nilo Saharan speaking populations primarily around Lake Chad until desertification. Those Niger-Congo populations who were present in that region of the Sahara (as opposed to Western Desert and regions close to the Nile) migrated Westward into Saharan-West Africa, as opposed to the more tropical regions of the sub continent which were not inhabitable at the time.
